Meet + Greet

Jaynie Johnson, 34, and Nathan Johnson, 37 (founders of design studio Blacklist), Willow, 7, Dare, 3, and Rocko, 1.

How would you describe your family home style?

Jaynie: We have a very relaxed, uncomplicated style. We like our home to be an easy living space – fuss-free, low-maintenance and a place where children can be children and our friends aren’t stressed when they come and hang.

What was the concept behind your kitchen and dining room area?

We just wanted to be able to all hang out in the one zone, so that when we are making dinner it is a communal event. Everyone has their own bedroom where they can retreat to when needed, but we wanted the living spaces to be very cohesive. Plus, we only have limited space.

Which items or fixtures did you splurge on and where did you save?

We didn’t splurge on anything – only art. We bought a secondhand oven, stove and rangehood and I painted the exterior myself at eight months pregnant!

What’s the one thing you would change about your home if you could?

We would move the pool and extend the back.

What was your overall renovation budget?

Very minimal. When we first moved in we did a AU$15,000 reno, then five years later we did another one for the kitchen, two bathrooms and the extension, all for AU$100,000.

What are your favourite homeware shops?

I love Les Interieurs, Water Tiger and MCM House, and thrift stores for vintage finds.

The beautiful floorboards were original but Jaynie and Nathan had to work hard to reveal their full glory. “They were buried under concrete so Nathan and I spent a weekend jackhammering it all up, then had them bleached and lime-washed.”

Jaynie and Nathan’s style is casual and uncomplicated, with clean white providing a backdrop for lots of natural textures and materials. These statement pendant lights are from Les Interieurs in Sydney.

This large sliding door leads to a sensory playroom which runs the full length of the house. The home’s new kitchen is fitted with a secondhand stovetop, oven and rangehood, which sums up Jaynie and Nathan’s no-nonsense approach to their home life.

The home’s backyard pool and deck zone was planned as a place where Jaynie and Nathan could laze while their three kids had fun in the pool. The ‘Surf’ mural was painted by Nathan and a group of friends who create street art under the name @thosejazzcats.

Shop their style ‘The Brightest’ unframed extra-large canvas print, AU$290, from Blacklist. Large Firth lamp, $399.99, from A&C Homestore. Bentwood chair No 18, $248, from Thonet.
