This home’s colour palette was inspired by its owner’s favourite handbag

Thanks to a little trial and error, this clever homeowner created a kitchen with natural textures and a palette of earthy greens that carry through the rest of the house

“I have a Harry & Co handbag which is a beautiful mix of olive grey and green, and I used this as my colour palette across the house. The kitchen cupboards are soft green, which blends with the darker green of the outdoor room, the downstairs bathroom vanity, and our fire, which is an amazing deep forest green,” says Hayley.

Hayley wanted the white cabinetry to look a little like a Mondrian geometrical painting. She opted to streamline the look with handle-less drawers and cupboards which look great but “pop open whenever the kids slouch on them so have taken some getting used to”.

Budget

As the scope of the renovation grew into an almost complete rebuild, the budget ballooned. Here’s a reality check from Hayley: “Add another third to your budget at the very least, another third to your timeline, and a third to your emotional intelligence quotient for the sake of all your working and family relationships.”

Hayley and Zane were keen for kids and adults to have space to hang out separately while not feeling cut off. A study area, window nooks, and a widened hallway for jam sessions are just some of the ways they’ve done this.

Earthy greens, white and wood unify this kitchen with the outdoor room.

The master bedroom looks out towards the sea and catches the morning sun. The bedspread was made by Hayley’s grandmother and aunt for her wedding present 25 years ago.

Hayley had the vanity custom-coloured in soft shades (Resene Karen Walker ‘Blanched Pink’) as she wanted the room to feel timeless rather than gleamingly modern.

Neutral walls and fittings in the kids’ bedrooms leave plenty of space for self-expression in the form of toys, art, books and furnishings.

Architect Adam Taylor suggested band-sawn Japanese cedar weatherboards for texture and visual interest. “The depth and robust detail [of this material] around exterior corners and windows all contribute to a highly detailed and shadowed facade,” he says.
