A retro beachside revamp

The new back deck was designed to make the most of all times of day and any weather.

Since school teacher Judy and husband Peter downsized from a 10-acre farm to a beach shack on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula, they haven’t looked back

They lived in the house for a year before extending the kitchen/dining area and adding all-season outdoor areas.

Judy and Peter live here with their daughter Harriet and dogs Roxy and Gracie, who’ve been part of the family for 10 years.

“Our floors are covered in what will be our future family heirlooms – our Afghan rugs,” says Judy. “We have 11 of them and they just get better with age.”

An old hurricane lantern adds charm to the outdoor dining setting. “The outdoor entertaining areas were created to maximise the shade in summer and the sun in winter so there’s always a perfect place to relax when family and friends are over, which is often,” says Judy.

An attractive laundry basket and towel ladder encourage tidiness in the bathroom.

White furniture allows colour accents to pop in Harriet’s room.

“I love to buy good-quality linen and throws for the beds when they are on sale,” says Judy. “Our daughter bought the art above our bed on a trip to Central Australia – we love it!”

A simple recycled wood block adds a rustic touch to the kitchen.

By retaining the original windows, the old charm of the beach house has been maintained. The coffee table was once a dining table.

The outdoor green chairs were sale buys from Adairs. “I love the colour and their retro style suits the house,” Judy says.

The new back deck was designed to make the most of all times of day and any weather.

The old ladder by the front door is now a family heirloom; it belonged to Peter’s very handy father.
