A dark, dated bedroom is transformed into a light and lovely space with a Mid-century modern makeover by interior designer Tina Stephen
The problem
The room was dated and dark, with awkward small wardrobes, commercial-style blinds, old carpet and brown veneer doors.
The brief
Lighten the space and create simple luxury with layered textures and quality pieces.
The Solution
– Strip back the wallpaper and dark overhead beams and modernise with a warm grey neutral
– Replace the carpet with charcoal wool carpet + Add sheer white linen curtains over the blinds to give the small room a light, floaty feel
– Raise curtains to full wall height and length to give a sense of space and height
– Add custom made bedside tables in American Oak, with drawers and a shelf for added storage
– Mount wall lights to eliminate clutter on side tables, featuring bespoke brass fittings to add a classic element
[quote title=”Now, our room is so relaxing ” green=”true” text=”and features a calm, natural colour palette” marks=”true”]
– Achieve diffused light by changing the central shade to a replica George Nelson Bubble pendant
– Redesign the double occupancy wardrobes for maximum height and width, with concertina doors to allow for more storage space
– Remove the door that swung in awkwardly and replace with a space-saving cavity slider
– Style the room with quality textured bedding in neutral tones, offset with a dark fabric headboard and sheepskins for added warmth
Erin says:
Our bedroom was not a restful space – it had peach wallpaper, a tiny wardrobe and mismatched furniture! The small wardrobe was a major problem, the room was not insulated, and an inward swinging hallway door obstructed flow into the small room. Now, our room is so relaxing, and features a calm, neutral colour palette. The beautiful lighting, great bedlinen, bespoke bedside tables and a much bigger and more functional wardrobe have transformed the room. Changing the swinging door to a cavity slider has also worked really well. Tina understood our goals and aesthetic from the start, and now we absolutely love our bedroom!
