A clever renovation doubled the floor space of this tired 1980s home

Matte black walls give the kitchen a crisp, contemporary feel. Stylish industrial pendants with exposed over-sized bulbs provide efficient task lighting and bring balance and symmetry to the space.

The updated home now includes three bedrooms, two modern bathrooms, an outdoor kitchen/living area and generous double garaging.

Kelly’s style tips include sticking to black, white and wood and introducing colour through indoor plants.

The polished concrete floors are perfect in this open plan, monochrome space and comfy couches and snuggly throws soften the space.

The renovation doubled the floor area from 79 square metres to 193 square metres.

The house is mostly painted in neutral tones (Resene ‘Tea’ in varying depths).

Last year the couple decided to redecorate, with Kelly – who has her own interior design business, The Little Interiors Co – keen to put her skills to work.

The exterior’s monochrome treatment mirrors the home’s interior colour palette, allowing Kelly’s style to flow inside and out.

Kelly and Shane have created a lovely family home that will stand the test of time thanks to its well-functioning layout and interior design.

A geometric wall feature breaks up the space in the playroom and leads the eye up to the garland, plant and ornament display.

A ply wall above the textile storage space hints at her love of Scandinavian design.

The wall cut-out between the playroom and hallway lets Kelly keep an eye on her two littlies as they play.

White floating Ikea shelves and a ply chest of drawers are indicative of Kelly’s love of Scandi design, and a Muuto wall dot is a great place to hang necklaces.

For the master bedroom, Kelly loved the idea of being in her own private gallery, so the walls are adorned with family photos and portraits of the children.

Kelly and Shane created a clean, airy Scandi interior by limiting their colour palette.

In the bathroom, a crisp white palette and white accessories keep things simple and fresh.

Although Tyler and Paige share a room, Kelly has introduced accessory colours to differentiate each side of the room, giving each child their own zone despite the shared space.

“I went with colour choices that would work well with the room’s existing decor and bedroom furniture,” Kelly explains.

“I love decorating kid’s rooms. Seeing a child’s face light up when you create a unique space just for them is so awesome,” says Kelly.

In the children’s shared bedroom Kelly has injected large doses of style and personality by painting over-sized black geometric shapes on the walls.

Six-year-old Tyler enjoys his personally-themed half of the bedroom.

Cute prints stick to the monochrome theme in the kids’ bedroom.

“The outdoor room is an extension of us and the way we live,” says Kelly.

“We have created a fun backyard for the kids to play in, too,” says Kelly.

“We really like nothing better than staying home, entertaining friends and family and enjoying our surroundings,” says Kelly.
