Who lives here?
Marc Becker, senior infrastructure engineer, Mirelle Simas, logistics manager.

Who designed the kitchen?
Susan Templer, Templer Interiors.

Space cadet – Designer Q&A

What was the idea behind the renovation?
Susan: This villa renovation included moving and enlarging the kitchen area. The existing space was located at the back of the house in a poorly constructed and very cold addition. My clients are keen cooks, so they requested lots of storage and work space. The traditional or bungalow style works well with the rest of the house.

The results

What was the best moment during the process?
When the dry wall was up you could really see how amazing the new space was going to be.

How does the new space work for you?
It works extremely well for us. We wanted a kitchen where Marc and I could cook together. It turned out to be such a large space. Susan has delivered on all fronts.

What’s your favourite feature of the new space?
It’s hard to pick just one, I love my baking corner as well as the breakfast bar.

Any major disasters?
Mirelle: We had issues with the roof. We were only going to replace half but we ended up redoing the entire thing. Dealing with Qual-Built made this not as scary as it could have been.

Budget

What was your budget?
We had a budget of $50,000. We splurged on a wine and beverage fridge. We could have kept with just one but they are handy and everyone loves it…

What did you save on?
We stained the floors and did the painting ourselves.
