This inner-city garden has the ultimate low-maintenance style
This neglected urban garden took six weeks to transform into a chic, contemporary sanctuary. A hodge-podge of boundary structures was painted dark grey to create a sense of unity and the utility area was disguised with warm cedar screening. A raised area was paved to make the space feel more like a courtyard and to create a cohesive outdoor entertaining zone.
By placing the barbecue near the house and the entertaining area at a distance, guests are encouraged to venture out to explore. Low-maintenance planting ensures this garden is easy to look after and a combination of built-in and floating furniture makes the space flexible – the perfect urban mix.
Top three design tips
- Think about how you use your garden, or how you want to use it, and how you’d like to feel while spending time in it.
- Know how much time you can devote to maintaining it.
- If the job is too big, engage a designer to help.
