Tim Burton is selling his Oxfordshire estate and the interior aesthetic is not what we expected

There's no weird or wacky in this traditional cottage.

People might know Director Tim Burton for his weird and wonderful film aesthetic, but his own home is surprisingly traditional. The prolific film director has put his Oxfordshire home on the market for an asking price of £4.5 million (NZ$10.1 million) with Savills Real Estate.

Located in the Oxfordshire village of Sutton Courtenay, Burton first purchased the 18th-century Grade II-listed property in 2006 with his partner at the time, actress Helena Bonham Carter. The property was built in 1741 and was originally the foreman’s residence for the Sutton Mill, an important paper mill. Bonham Carter’s great-grandfather, Herbert Henry Asquith—who was also the British Prime Minister between 1908 and 1916—later owned it.

Occupying 17 acres of beautiful grounds and river frontage on the Thames, the property is everything you would expect of a traditional English country home. The interiors spread across three floors each feature classic Georgian elements. These features include 16-pane sash windows, decorative plaster cornicing, deep skirtings, panelled doors, and original fireplaces.

The ground floor contains a grand entrance hall, multiple reception rooms, a dining room and a kitchen. The classically decorated living spaces are detailed with plenty of cosy, lived-in furnishings, books and artworks. While the real estate listing doesn’t show the kitchen, the description highlights a four-door AGA, walk-in pantry, and connected utility and mud room.

The main bedroom and four further bedrooms are located on the second floor, with the main bedroom connected to its bathroom and a smaller bedroom that would make an ideal nursery or dressing room. Two attic bedrooms connect to a small sitting area and bathroom, making them ideal for teenagers or a guest’s retreat.

Outside might be the property’s selling point, with the grounds made up of beautiful woodland, a string of waterways and three islands. There’s also a formal rose garden, a courtyard garden, a croquet lawn and a wooden summer house that’s sure to provide plenty of imaginative inspiration.
