This family took inspiration from the laid back lifestyle and trees surrounding their Waiheke Island bach to give their loo a new lease of life
Statement wallpaper helped to make this cold bach bathroom pop
Who lives here? This holiday house on Waiheke Island is shared between the families of Kate Gillespie and her siblings Meg and Tim.
What was the space like before? Kate: It was a plain white space with no redeeming features.
What did you do to make it over? We wallpapered every wall, repainted the ceiling and door, and installed a new toilet. We also added a new mirror and replaced the exposed-bulb light – I splurged on a light fitting from Douglas & Bec. We kept the existing floor tiles and basin to save on costs. We also added a bottle of beautiful Aesop handwash and a new toilet brush and roll holder. Most of the budget went on the Cole & Son ‘Palm Jungle’ wallpaper.
Biggest challenge? Deciding whether to wallpaper or not. I was unsure if papering the whole room was going to make it feel overwhelming, but it hasn’t at all. As the house is at Palm Beach on Waiheke, the wallpaper felt like a perfect fit.
What do you think of the room now? Everyone loves it! It has turned the loo from a dull, uninspiring space into somewhere fun and interesting. Children particularly love it.
