I’m house-proud and time-poor, so while I dream of spotless kitchen floors free of toddler spills and pet hair, I can’t keep up. That’s why I’ve given in to my robot vacuum. Honestly, it’s much more thorough at cleaning than I could ever be.
Robot vacuums are the solution to messy kids, moulting pet fur, and flatmates arguing over the cleaning roster. Fundamentally, they’re a low-maintenance way to keep floors sparkling between deep cleans.
Patrick Wang, ANZ Category Manager at Dreame, highlights a rapid shift towards smart cleaning devices in the last two years, stating, “The fastest-growing category is our robot vacuums — specifically models that offer both vacuuming and mopping.”
He explains, “Customers are now prioritising true automation, recognising the huge time-saving value of a robot that can handle both core cleaning tasks.”
To help you find the best robot vacuum for your home, the Your Home and Garden team compared models based on key features. If you’re new to robot vacuums, aside from choosing a vacuum or vacuum-mop in one, here’s what to keep in mind:
- Suction power: How well the robot vacuum picks up dust, dirt, and debris from your floors.
- User-friendliness: How simple it is to control, including through a phone app.
- Battery life: Can the robot vacuum clean your whole floor without needing to recharge?
- Navigation: How well it moves around your home, avoids obstacles, cleans corners, and fits under furniture.
- Smart cleaning: Can the robot vacuum sense dirtier spots and clean them more thoroughly?
- Climbing ability: How easily it moves over small bumps like thresholds, carpets, or furniture legs.
- Self-cleaning dock: Some robot vacuums return to a docking station after cleaning, where the station empties debris and dirty water before washing and drying the mop head.
- Value for money: Does it perform well for the price you’re paying?

How do I pick the best robot vacuum?
Deciphering what all the features and specs mean can be overwhelming. My advice? Within your budget, choose a robot vacuum that works with your flooring, space, and lifestyle. Here’s what to consider:
- Can you operate the robot vacuum remotely through a mobile app or schedule cleans?
- Does the robot vacuum come with a self-cleaning dock for low-maintenance upkeep?
- How high can the robot vacuum climb over thresholds in your house?
- Does the robot vacuum use a side brush to clean corners?
- Does it have an anti-tangle brush for picking up pet and human hair without getting stuck?
- How long is the run time? Can the robot vacuum clean large floor areas without needing a recharge?
- Can the robot vacuum navigate and detect obstacles?
- Can the mop scrub tough stains?
If you’ve never operated a robot vacuum before, keep in mind that it won’t climb up and down an entire set of stairs, so for multi-storey houses, you’ll need to move it up and down levels, or splurge and buy one for each floor.

Can a robot vacuum replace my handheld/stick vacuum cleaner?
My robot vacuum hasn’t completely replaced my stick vacuum, but it’s a pretty good solution for in-between deep cleans. I use my robot vacuum at least twice a week, especially on days when my toddler is home and there’s food and mess scattered all over the floor.
That said, I use my regular vacuum every 2-4 weeks for a deeper clean, particularly when I’m in the mood for some manual labour (and the highly satisfying feeling of watching dust bunnies get sucked into the see-through cylinder).
If you only have time to do a thorough clean once a month or you have a cleaner who visits at least bi-weekly, a robot vacuum is, in my opinion, a life-saver for keeping floors clean. I often turn mine on at night once everyone is in bed and the toys are packed away, so that in the morning I wake to a clean house – before the chaos starts all over again.
Patrick Wang, ANZ Category Manager at Dreame, explains that it’s not about choosing one over the other, but understanding how the robot vacuum and handheld vacuum work together.
“Customers aren’t choosing one over the other; it’s about understanding how they serve as complementary tools. The robot vacuum is the powerhouse for autonomous daily floor maintenance,” he explains.
For quick and targeted cleaning, Wang points out that the handheld or stick vacuum “is the best option for immediate clean-ups. It’s for spot-cleaning spills, tackling car interiors, quickly doing the stairs, or reaching corners the robot vacuum might not.”
Are robot vacuums really worth it?
Yes, if you want to save time cleaning hair, dirt, dust and spills off the floor. Robot vacuums are a game-changing solution for busy households, pet owners, allergy sufferers and people with limited mobility. My tip? Buy a model that can be operated remotely through a mobile app and includes a self-cleaning docking station so you barely have to lift a finger.
Wang emphasises the convenience of hands-off cleaning, noting how modern robot vacuum models reduce human interaction with dirt and grime.
“They now have self-emptying bases, self-washing mop pads, and self-refilling water tanks,” he explains. “The goal is to minimise human interaction with the grime as much as possible.”
Why are robot vacuums rising in popularity?
In 2023, the international robot vacuum industry was valued at $4.5 billion, according to Global Market Insights, and more and more Kiwis are choosing robo vacs for their homes, reflecting this global rise in home automation.
Wang says three key drivers are fuelling the trend towards households investing in multiple vacuum cleaners or smart cleaning devices: “time, elevated hygiene standards, and smart home integration.”
“Time is the new luxury. People are valuing their free time more than ever, and automating the chore of floor cleaning gives back hours every week.”
“Elevated hygiene standards have also become a priority. Since the pandemic, there’s been a lasting focus on maintaining cleaner, healthier homes—particularly when it comes to reducing allergens and pet dander. Families are no longer willing to compromise on effective cleaning.”
Finally, Wang highlights the role of technology: “The smart home ecosystem has transformed these devices from simple appliances into connected tools. The ability to control your Dreame vacuum via an app, use voice commands with Google Assistant or Alexa, and have it integrated into your daily routine makes it an indispensable part of the modern smart home.”
How do robot hoovers map your home and avoid obstacles?
Modern robot vacuums use LiDAR or AI technology to map your home’s layout for regular cleaning. Features like multi-floor mapping and obstacle detection reduce the chance of getting stuck or missing spots, although occasional hiccups can still happen.
Wang adds, “AI-powered object avoidance has also become standard, allowing robots to intelligently navigate around shoes, cables, and pet messes instead of just bumping into them.”
Can robot vacuum cleaners handle pet hair?
If you share your home with furry friends, you’ll know how annoying sweeping up pet hair can be. Thankfully, the best robot vacuums are up for the challenge. Look for models with higher suction, anti-tangle and side brushes for cleaner, hair-free floors.
What’s the lifespan of a robot vacuum and mop?
Modern robot vacuums last around four to seven years if taken care of. Always follow the maintenance instructions in the manual, replace parts when needed, and update software when required.
Can robo vacs work without WiFi?
Some robot vacuums operate without WiFi, turning on with the press of a button. However, connecting to WiFi lets you make the most of handy features like remote scheduling via your mobile phone.
