Writer Pandora Sykes is not afraid to play with colours and textures in her home

In an excerpt from The Makers, writer Pandora Sykes’ home is a cosy and chic statement in fearlessness with colour and patterns
The sofa upholstered in squiggly red stripes is a favourite piece. Designer Matilda Goad is a friend of Pandora's and her work, including the scallop-edged lampshade, can be seen throughout the house. The local antiques market has also been a great source of many vintage finds.

The property: Renovated three-storey Victorian terrace house in north-west London.

Can you have too much yellow? Not if you’re Pandora who selected leopard print curtains and set them against “India Yellow” painted walls and a sofa covered in turmeric-coloured chenille.

As someone who is naturally interested in the way people live, what they read, watch and talk about, it makes sense that Pandora Sykes has always known she wanted to be a journalist.

Beginning her career as a fashion journalism intern, the UK-born creative is now renowned for her brilliant social commentary and impressive portfolio of work that includes contributions to esteemed titles such as The Guardian, The Sunday Times, ELLE, GQ, Grazia and Vogue, several popular podcasts and her bestselling book, How Do We Know We’re Doing It Right?, a collection of essays that explore her musings on modern life.

Pandora evidently has a way with words, but she also has an eye for interior design, which shows throughout her beautiful home. Boasting whimsy and sophistication, it’s a study in how to use colour, pattern and eclectic decor to create a home truly reflective of your personal style.

From the turmeric-toned living room to the pink-hued main bedroom, her Victorian terrace is swathed in lashings of colour, executed in a way that feels harmonious from room to room.

“I like colour and I like decoration but there’s also a restraint, I think, because I don’t like rooms to look like rainbows and I hate, hate clutter,” says Pandora.

There is also a definite playfulness to the home’s design. Patterned wallpaper and soft furnishings, ornate decor and various styles of artwork culminate to create a cosy yet chic scheme that looks expertly put together.

“I also don’t mind things looking a bit “bad taste” – I have leopard print curtains, so that’s obvious – and I love vintage and antiques,” Pandora says. From the eclectic mix of furniture to the plethora of accessories, the home’s design feels masterfully thought out and steeped in love. “A house is a living thing and I like it to feel like a dynamic space,” she says of the ongoing design process.

It was Pandora’s ambition to create an interior her family would never get bored of (mission accomplished). In this bathroom, the wallpaper is Cole & Son’s coral Versailles, which depicts animals and birds against a wooded landscape of trees and follies.

A cheerful green paint shade was used on the vanity, clawfoot bathtub and bathroom cabinet with gleaming brass trim and accessories.
