It was a hasty “tools down” moment as the teams finished up their first room reveal challenge. We take a closer look at their guest bedrooms.
The Block NZ: Week one guest bedroom reveal
Teams went pedal to the metal in the final hours of their first room reveal challenge with a looming incentive at stake for this week’s winner. The winning team would get the first choice in which house they ultimately wanted to go on to complete for auction with house four – the corner property with plenty of windows and sunlight – being the obvious favourite among teams.
There were expected teething issues in week one with young Aucklanders Ben and Tom sacrificing sleep, styling and tidy finishings to make way for a bold design direction, while Hamilton soulmates Claire and Agni made the error of painting a feature wall black – a bold and off-brief decision – before painting it white again to realise they actually do want it black. Inseparable besties Chlo and Em from Palmerston North too strayed from their ‘Peacock Luxe’ brief opting for millennial pink walls, but it was Gisborne husband and wife Amy and Stu who remained cool, calm and collected with time to spare ahead of their reveal presenting a ‘Moody Botanical’ guest bedroom scoring them a total of 17 ( 8 + 9) points following judging and the first room reveal win in the competition.

Third place for Claire + Agni who presents their ‘Dessert Chic’ guest bedroom. Judges believed it was slightly more coastal retreat than dessert chic but praised them on their wall hanging above the bed. Having lost their corner property to winner’s Amy and Stu, the couple makes a clean swap.
+ Bijou Wall Hanging, $159.00 from Freedom + Buba Round Stool, $99 from Freedom +Resene Black, $56.50 + Resene Double Alabaster, $56.50 + Peyton Bed Frame Queen Black, $499 from Freedom + Brinkley Cushion, $44.95 from Freedom
Ben + Tom present their ‘Coastal Retreat’ guest bedroom coming in last with a mere 10 points. While the bold move to include a skylight was admirable, rushed finishings and too literal of a brief interpretation let them down come judging.
Their “coastal chic” guest bedroom.
