Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your art journey so far?
I’m an abstract artist. I grew up in Tauranga, surrounded by the water and rolling hills. I’d always painted as a hobby when I was a kid, but never formally trained as an artist. I became a graphic designer instead. I hosted my first solo exhibition, Wonderland, in 2017. I’ve had two further solo exhibitions, got into ceramics and have done a few awesome collabs with my artworks. These days I work part-time in design and the rest of the time as an artist. I hope to have another collection to exhibit next year. I’m thinking coral, or something with underwater vibes.
Where do you look for inspiration?
I love to travel. The colours, crafts, architecture and textures are all super inspiring to me. I also love being by, on, or in the ocean and being outside in nature in general. As a kid, we often drove from Tauranga to the Waikato to visit family and for rowing regattas. On those trips, I’d look out at the rolling hills and I feel like they’ve been etched into my memory. These hillscapes inform a lot of my current artworks. I am also influenced by feelings and experiences, and these come out in my more abstracted paintings. Organic, flowy shapes and textures layer up and reveal themselves to me as I go. For these types of paintings, I don’t have a plan; I just take it as it comes and flow with it.
What’s the story behind Wonderland?

Wonderland was the hero piece from my first solo exhibition. The collection was inspired by some personal experiences and Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland – ending up in a magical, slightly strange place, filled with unknowns but also beauty. This print is a section taken from the painting and celebrates moving forward into the great unknown, along with the courage and beauty within that. “No use going back to yesterday, because I was a different person then.” – Alice, by Lewis Carroll.
Where in the home would the print look best?
This print could really go anywhere. But I think it’d be best somewhere that gets nice light and is looked at often. I can see it in a natural timber frame, or something a bit more out there, like a green or yellow frame. The softness in the print is a nice energy for a bedroom, home office or lounge. When you look at it, it can serve as a reminder to breathe, welcome what’s meant for you and believe in yourself.
