Warm your soul and embrace the chilly winter mornings with these tips

Look forward to the chilly winter mornings with these tips

As the days grow shorter and the air turns crisper, coaxing yourself out of bed in the morning can feel like a daunting task. When it’s dark, gloomy and raining outside, it certainly seems that winter mornings are designed to keep us snuggled up under the covers. But what if you could shift your perspective and relish the slow beauty of winter mornings?

Here are five simple and achievable tips to inspire a gentler wake-up routine – the kind you’ll actually look forward to getting up for.

1. Start with a moment of quiet

Before diving headfirst into the hustle and bustle of the day, gift yourself five minutes of gentle solitude. Envelop yourself in a soft blanket, cuddle a hot water bottle, and light a candle or switch on a diffuser.

When it comes to scent, studies show that citrus aromas can be particularly powerful when it comes to feeling energised, awakened and optimistic. I personally love the blend of peppermint and orange – it smells so fresh and invigorating.

Allow the beautiful aroma to fill the air, while taking a moment to breathe deeply and set your intentions for the day. During this time, you might like to read some lines of an inspiring book, journal, or simply bask in the quietude. But whatever you do, avoid your phone or device during this precious moment of stillness before the day unfurls.

2. Step outside your doorstep

Despite the chill in the air, there’s something invigorating about stepping outside to greet the day. Bundle up in your cosiest layers and venture outdoors, even if it’s only for a few minutes. Take a leisurely stroll around your garden or sip your morning brew on the patio.

I find that just a few minutes outside has the ability to elevate my mood and kick-start my day in the best way possible. And if you have time? A walk does absolute wonders first thing in the morning.

3. Serenade your senses

Let the soothing tones of classical or lo-fi music soften your mood as you ease into your morning routine. In our household, school mornings are made especially more relaxing when I remember to pop music on in the background.

Rather than rushing around, my kids seem to move at more of a leisurely pace, yet seem happier to simply get on with the things that need doing before we step outside the door.

4. Set yourself up for morning ease

Help create a seamless morning by taking care of various tasks the night before. Enjoy an early dinner and use the evening hours to tackle any preparations that will streamline your morning routine. Whether it’s packing lunches, laying out clothes, or organising your workspace, a little foresight can go a long way in alleviating the stressful morning rush.

Embrace the early sunset as a cue to wind down and hop into bed earlier. It’s an easy way to ensure you wake up feeling refreshed and ready to tackle the day.

5. Embrace realistic expectations

In a world inundated with reels of picture-perfect morning routines, it’s important to embrace the beauty of imperfection. Rather than striving for an Instagram-worthy start to your day, focus on what truly nourishes your soul.

Be gentle with yourself and start small, setting realistic goals that align with your energy, which can change daily. Whether it’s a simple stretch or a moment of quietness as mentioned above, I encourage you to choose simple rituals that bring you joy and set a loving tone towards yourself for the day.

Try this soul-soothing hot chocolate for your winter mornings

Sometimes, cold mornings can require something delicious to encourage you out of bed. This luxurious hot chocolate will do the trick.

Ingredients

  • 200ml milk of choice (I like coconut)
  • 1 Tbsp coconut oil or butter (this makes it extra creamy)
  • 1 Tbsp good-quality cocoa or cacao powder
  • ½ tsp ground cinnamon
  • 2 tsp pure maple syrup or honey
  • 1 tsp pure vanilla

Method

  1. Put all the ingredients in a small saucepan and heat until steaming.
  2. Carefully pour into a blender, then blend until creamy.
  3. Pour into your favourite mug (this part is essential) and enjoy.
