Kitchen drawers and cupboards are notorious for accumulating clutter. Here are Natalie Jane’s, our resident expert, top tips on how to get organised

Take a moment to think about what is working and what is not in your kitchen. If it’s working to keep your tea towels in the bottom drawer, keep them there. If it’s not working to have your pots and pans in a corner cupboard, that can be changed.

The biggest problem in a kitchen is that it doesn’t function in a way that makes sense. They are also generally overloaded with stuff. Today we’re going to spend some time fixing this! Clear surfaces so that you have plenty of room to sort items. Start with drawers and move onto cupboards, working methodically, drawer by drawer, cupboard by cupboard. Clean as you go.

Take all of the items out of each space and sort like with like. Have your banana boxes and rubbish bags handy. Make decisions on items and be realistic. Donate or throw any multiple or excess items, items you no longer use (and haven’t used in at least a year), items you don’t like and therefore won’t use and items that are old, tired and broken.

Ask yourself questions such as ‘How many platters do I need?’, ‘Do I really need that spare dinner set now that the kids have left home?’ and ‘Am I ever going to use that pasta maker?’ Once you have made your decisions, it’s time to reorganise! Plan ‘zones’ around the natural flow of activity that goes on in your kitchen. For example, a dishes zone, pots and pans zone, food prep zone and baking zone. Find homes for items within their zones and take time to think about where is the most practical and functional place for them to be stored. Frequently-used items need to be super easy to access and should be stored at their point of use.

Top tidy tips you should remember:

  • Get rid of multiple and excess items, things you haven’t used in a year and anything that is broken.
  • Create zones for your items and store things at their point of use.
  • Keep pot lids separate using a rack or container to nest them into.
  • Separate plastic container tops and bottoms and store in drawers using crates or large plastic baskets.
  • Use non-slip material inside drawers to stop items from sliding around.
  • Contain small handheld tools in a vessel to keep parts together.
  • Review and declutter every six months.
