In part three of our eight-part series on adding value to your home, our expert looks at two areas that sometimes don’t see a lot of love.
It’s fair to say the laundry and garage aren’t the sexiest rooms in the house, but that doesn’t mean they shouldn’t shine. After all, we spend a surprising amount of time moving through these spaces and getting everyday jobs done.
1. Creating seperation
If your laundry is located in the garage, create a clear separation between the two areas. Not only does this make the space feel more organised, but it’s also beneficial when it comes time to sell, as both areas can be marketed independently. Consider louvred doors for ventilation, or solid sliding and bifold doors, if you have a self-condensing dryer.
2. Streamlining
For internal laundries, matching appliances create a streamlined look. One of my favourite design tricks is raising the washing machine and dryer off the floor to waist height. Not only is it easier on your back, but the space underneath becomes valuable storage for laundry powder, cleaning products, pet supplies and household essentials.
3. Laundry tub
A laundry tub is still a must-have. Incorporate one into your cabinetry design and, if possible, install a pull-out shower-head mixer. It’s perfect for rinsing muddy sports gear, soaking laundry and washing the family dog.
4. Add a rail
A simple hanging rail for shirts and delicate items is another practical addition that makes everyday life easier. Keep finishes simple with painted MDF cabinetry and add a splash of personality with classic subway tiles above the tub area.
5. Furnishing
Finish the room the same way you would any other space in your home. Add woven baskets, neatly folded towels, a plant and your favourite diffuser or scented sticks.
6. Garages
Garages deserve just as much attention. A well-designed garage can double as a workshop, home gym, teenager hangout, hobby room or home office.
7. Storage
Storage is key. Slimline shelving along the side walls can accommodate everything from garden tools and golf clubs to camping gear and Christmas decorations, while still allowing enough room to comfortably park your vehicles.
8. Flooring
If you’re considering carpet in the garage, it can dramatically improve comfort and versatility, particularly for families with teenagers or those needing additional recreational space.
9. Street appeal
Don’t overlook street appeal either. A tidy garage door can significantly improve the overall appearance of your home, while sensor lighting on either side of the door provides both a welcoming ambience and an extra layer of security.
Laundries and garages work best when they’re well planned. They’re often the spaces that make everyday living easier.
