It’s not uncommon to think that displaying your tableware and cooking supplies on open shelving can create a visually more cluttered space, when in fact it does the opposite. Open shelving can actually make your kitchen feel more light and spacious.

Plus, with all your beautiful ceramics, pottery, tableware and vases on display, it’s the perfect opportunity to capture the perfect #shelfie.

It’s easy to conceal chaos when it’s behind closed doors, open shelving is a constant reminder to keep your clutter under control. The key is not to go too heavy with your displays. Keep space between each item and pair it back to your favourite tableware pieces. Include items with different heights and materials to keep it visually appealing.

If an entire kitchen with open-shelving is pushing your ability to Marie-Condo too far, limit it to one section of your kitchen. A few open shelves amongst a wall of cabinetry is a great way to break up the space and add some “breathing room”.

For open shelving to actually be useful, make sure your shelves are at least 300mm in depth – at this size, they will be able to store most items comfortably.

Functionally, they are a great addition to a kitchen as they provide easy and visual access.

If you need more convincing, take a look at these 20 kitchens with open shelving below:
