Learn how to: Mix patterns
Neutral colours are no doubt easier to style, but let’s take some risks. Let’s live a little and add some pattern. Mixing patterns in a room can bring it to life in a new way, plus your friends will think you’re a daring outlaw who lives by no one’s rules. All you need is one anchor pattern, then have a bit of fun with the rest.
The next big thing
Every so often, it seems someone looks at a household item that hasn’t changed in 50 years and thinks, “I think we can make that chic”, which they have gone and done with the humble household match. No longer something to be hidden away in a drawer, these matchboxes are a decoration in their own right.
What I’m loving: Deep reds and purples
I love a room that feels cosy and inviting. As much as I can appreciate a minimalist design approach, nothing invites a relaxing moment with a book more than deep, cosy colours.
Hang it: Tapestry
Have a big blank wall? A tapestry makes a bold statement of colour and texture and can be a beautiful statement piece. You can scour online auctions and antique stores to find one (although it might need to be beaten with a broom before hanging), or buy new.
Save & Splurge: Wash baskets
There are some items in a home that in days gone by have been purely functional. But we are living in a world where functionality doesn’t have to be at the expense of aesthetics. We can elevate our everyday mundane activities simply by making the vessel more interesting, like this laundry basket from Citta. Laundry is a relatively boring daily task, so why not change the usual plastic baskets with something that sparks a bit of joy?
Life lesson: Help kids to help themselves
My eldest is only six, but he’s someone who likes to know what’s coming up. A wall planner for a child’s room is brilliant, as it helps them get a grasp on the days of the week, as well as gives them independence to get their own belongings organised for what’s coming up in their life. This one from The Waste-Free Home looks lovely and modern, comes with stickers, and has a different colour for every month – perfect.
