Expat and co-founder of the SUTRAM homewares line, Kate Fowler lives in Sydney with her partner, two daughters and a cat. Her place is furnished with pieces that have a history where you can see “the turn of hand”.

The five homewares Kate Fowler can’t live without

1. Ceramic Lapis Cups
$65.00 at Fourth Street
These ceramic Fourth Street vessels are incredibly versatile—they can be used as generous cups for water or tea, pencil cups, toothbrush holders, or even vases. We love the coordinating bowls, too, which are the perfect size for your morning cereal or warming winter soups.

2. Sutram Euro Pillow Pair in Lilac and Carob
$130.00 at Sutram
Rukaiya [Daud, SUTRAM co-founder] and I have always been interested in the tension between colours and this was front of mind for us while developing the palette and range.
This lilac and carob pairing offers the versatility of heroing one colour or the other. I love three euros across a king bed or a solo euro on a single bed – this one lives in my daughter Saachi’s bedroom.

3. Jenga Coffee Table
from $3594.68 at Saint Leo
I have my eye on this coffee table from Saint Leo. Our place has a lot of textural elements and I feel like a sculptural metal piece like this would offset that well. Also extremely useful for storage purposes, and fun for little visitors.

4. Tawa Bar Stool
$1,205.00 at Simon James
We recently brought this bar stool by Japanese maker Ariake into our kitchen space.
There’s only room for two seats under the benchtop so this one sits against the wall, somewhat plinth-like – often with a handbag on top until it is required for its intended purpose. We love the natural finish and the hand-feel of the rounded edges.

5. Sutram Long Bolster in Cinder
$320.00 at Sutram
Our bolsters come in a tactile heavyweight cotton. At one metre long, it really anchors a bed scene, especially the off-black cinder, which delivers a good dose of contrast. For impact, I have paired it with the coordinating valance in our room.
