Add serious style to your next picnic with this favourite from the ’50s

Melamine resin was invented in the 1930s and put into service during the Second World War. The plastic was popular for its affordability, lightweight, unbreakable nature and, in later years, the ease with which colourful designs could be applied to its surface.

Melamine kitchenware took off in the 1950s and 1960s, when every picnic basket and home had a stash of cups or plates. Recently there has been a resurgence, with brands such as Orla Kiely and Marimekko continuing to breathe life into the material.

Check out our gallery and see how you can add this trend to your next picnic.
