As any interior designer will tell you, the simple placement of a rug can transform a space. A well-chosen rug anchors furniture, defines open-plan zones, and adds depth, colour, and interest.

The number one mistake buyers often make? Choosing the wrong-sized rug, particularly one that’s too small for the space. Nicole Skinner, furniture buyer at Mocka, notes that undersized rugs can make your room “feel discounted”. Hannah Middleton, head designer at Baya, agrees: “The most common mistake is going too small, which leaves the room feeling disjointed.”

Speaking to Your Home and Garden, Middleton explains that because the rug is the “foundation of a space, bringing warmth, balance, and flow”, its placement should ensure it “feels integral, not like an afterthought”.

How do I choose the right colour or pattern for my rug?

You can play it safe with a neutral-toned rug, although sometimes, a bold pattern or colour can pay off if the rest of the room is relatively neutral.

Hannah Middleton, head designer at soft furnishings brand Baya, explains that “colour and pattern are where a rug truly comes to life – they set the tone of a room and can transform its mood. The right choice should reflect your style while harmonising with existing elements.”

Middleton’s tip is to “pick up a colour already in the room – perhaps from a cushion, artwork, or timber tone, and echo it in the rug for cohesion”.

She adds to consider scale when choosing a pattern: “larger designs create a bold impact, while finer patterns add detail without overwhelming. Ultimately, your rug should anchor the room with intention, tying everything together through colour and expression.”

Is there a difference between living room and bedroom rugs?

For busy living areas, choose a low-pile wool or jute rug for durability and easy cleaning, or a machine washable rug. For bedrooms and quieter spaces, you can prioritise comfort and softness, opting for high-pile weaves or sheepskin for a cosy underfoot feel.

Why rug size matters

A small rug in a large room can make the space feel even smaller, whereas a generously proportioned rug will make a room feel larger and more cohesive.

Middleton echoes this sentiment. She explains that choosing a rug that’s too small is a common mistake, and leaves a room feeling disjointed.

“A well-sized, well-placed rug ties furniture together, creating harmony and elevating the entire room”, she advises.

How to place your rug in your room

Depending on the size of your rug, the centre of the room is a good place to start. You will need it to fill most of the space. Or, you could centre it around a focal point like a fireplace.

For the living room, Middleton advises, “at minimum, place the front legs of sofas and chairs on the rug. For a more generous look, choose a size that allows all legs to sit on it, creating scale and cohesion.”

In the bedroom, Middleton explains that “rugs add comfort and grounding. Position one under the lower two-thirds of the bed so it frames the space and provides a soft landing.”

Can I place a rug over carpet?

If you’re after a layered look for visual interest, this is a quick way to achieve it. Rugs are also a lifesaver for hiding threadbare carpet or large stains, which is particularly useful if you’re renting. When you move, simply take your rug with you.

Avoid using a broadloom rug (which is typically what carpets are) or a bulky shag style. Instead, opt for a kilim, dhurrie, or another low-profile flat-weave rug that will sit flush.

How do I secure a rug in place?

An unsecured rug can be considered a health and safety issue, especially if you have rugs on wooden floors that tend to move – you don’t want to go for a skate accidentally. The easiest solution is to use a rug underlay beneath the rug. These are usually stickier or made from textured materials to prevent slippage. A bonus? A rug underlay can prevent the edges of your rug from curling up.
