How to create a contemporary kitchen

A contemporary kitchen is not afraid to make a statement in the home and harnesses on-trend elements to create a fresh and energising vibe. Bold colour or contrast is often used for wow factor, such as these dark cabinets paired with a pale benchtop and plain white tiles. Surfaces should be sleek and uncluttered with ornamentation kept to a minimum so the strong structural shapes can take centre stage. Here, square tiles create a grid which ties in with the horizontal lines of the cabinetry and elongated light. Industrial elements such as concrete floors, wire cabling, stone benchtops and steel-legged chairs or stools work well, and materials can be mixed for contrast and texture.

How to create a classic kitchen

Going for a classic look is a savvy choice when installing a new kitchen. Clean lines, neutral colours and subtle finishes give the impression of quality and efficiency – and, crucially, will stand the test of time, continuing to blend in with your home’s interior as it changes over the years. Go for white, neutrals, sleek timber and stainless steel. Cabinetry and shelves should have unfussy profiles, and keep tapware and handles simple and classic (black gives a little edge to the look). Add texture through an interesting but low-key splashback and limit vibrant colour to a few accessories.

How to create a coastal kitchen

This look is all about achieving a breezy, relaxed, beachy feel. Choose a palette of white combined with soft or moody blues or touches of sea-foam green (maritime navy is good, too). Tongue-and-groove details – such as the panelling disguising the rangehood – are perfect here, along with lots of natural textures such as the woven mat and timber floor, shelves and stool top. Glossy, hand-fired splashback tiles create a shimmering effect like sunlight on the ocean, while industrial-style metal lights and stools keep things stripped back and shipshape.
