Tips for choosing and styling your real Christmas tree

The right Christmas tree size will help you make the most of your space without it looking too sparse or crowded. Measuring your ceiling height before selecting a tree is a good starting point.
Standard Auckland ceilings (2.4m) are ideal for small, medium, or large trees, while bungalows (2.7m) and villas (3.3-3.6m) can accommodate huge or massive tree sizes.
Hot tip: Keep in mind that the taller the tree, the wider it will be, so ensure you have enough floor space to accommodate its base.
When styling your real Christmas tree, consider the following:
- Styling small-sized Christmas trees: Group miniature trees together for a decorative effect. Use minimal decorations like fairy lights and small baubles to keep things light and airy.
- Styling medium-sized Christmas trees: The perfect size for most entranceways, living rooms and open-plan spaces, use a mix of medium and small ornaments to add interest without overwhelming the tree. Use a cohesive colour scheme to tie your vision together.
- Styling large and tall-sized Christmas trees: Use a mix of ornaments in varying sizes and layers of texture, like tinsel and beaded garlands, to add depth. Incorporate oversized details like a bold tree topper to draw attention. Consider vertical decorations like cascading ribbons and long icicle ornaments to emphasise your tree’s height.
How do I care for a real fir, spruce or pine Christmas tree?
Co-owner of Misa Christmas Tree Farm, Michael Fuyala, advises the following:
- To keep your Christmas tree fresh for longer, place it in a cool, shady spot away from direct sunlight and air conditioning units.
- Keep the base topped up with water, especially during the first 48 hours after the tree has been cut, as this is when it is particularly thirsty.
- If your tree is out of water for more than half an hour after bringing it home, slice at least half a centimetre off the base. This will remove any layers of congealed sap and allow the tree to absorb water properly.

Who owns Misa Christmas Tree Farm?
The Misa Christmas Tree Farm, spanning just over one hectare, has deep roots in family history. It all began with Michael Fuyala’s grandfather, Tom, and great-uncle Karl, who purchased the land. Originally from Dalmatia (Croatia), Tom was sent to New Zealand alone at just 14 to support his family back home. Working as a gum digger in the Far North, he eventually settled in Auckland on the Misa homestead with his wife Antica, and Karl.
The Christmas tree tradition started with Michael’s mother, Ivy Misa, and her brother Ron who set up a small macrocarpa Christmas tree stall on the farm. Recognising the tree stall’s potential, Tom and Karl turned it into a seasonal business. Karl, a beloved family figure, lived to 100, and after his passing, Ron took over the farm, balancing it with his fishing career.
In 2011, when Ron was diagnosed with motor neuron disease, the family rallied to keep the tradition alive. Michael, alongside his brother Tom and cousin Ivan Sokolich, stepped in to manage the farm, with support from the wider family.
“That last year when Uncle Ron became ill, I took five weeks off work and managed the farm,” Michael explains. “It wouldn’t have been very nice for him to see it closed, because he was quite passionate about the business. So I got my HT licence and learned to drive a truck!”
