As we count down to the most wonderful time of the year, it’s time to start thinking about the real highlight: Christmas tree decorations. By mid-November, I dust off my favourite tree ornaments, then browse Pinterest for a dose of inspiration, from fresh colour palettes to kitsch decorations — like a glass of spritz, a surfing kiwi, or these fun and affordable Typo ornaments.
Alongside Christmas tree ornaments, there’s also the matter of choosing your tree, whether you’re opting for a real fir or pine tree or an alternative Xmas tree, made from driftwood or a fabulously faux colour like white, pink, blue or silver.

What is a Christmas tree skirt, and why do I need one?
A tree skirt is the decorative fabric or material that sits at the base of your Christmas tree. Its many purposes include concealing the tree stand and unsightly Christmas light cords, while catching fallen needles from real fir or pine trees.
My tip? Christmas tree skirts come in various fabrics and materials, choose one that matches your overall festive decor scheme for cohesion.
How do I choose the colours for my Christmas tree decorations?
When styling your Christmas tree, if you’re looking to complement a natural green pine, go for red, gold and silver tree ornaments for a classic and bold look.
Going for a white Christmas tree? Try pastel, icy blue and silver decorations for a winter wonderland effect. Alternatively, flip this scheme around and go for a pink or blue tree with silver and white Christmas tree ornaments for a modern finish.
What’s the best way to decorate my Christmas tree?
After putting up the tree, I always start with the lights. Weave them from the bottom, close to the trunk, then out and around the tree for depth and even glow.
Then, space your Christmas tree ornaments evenly for balance, but avoid making them too symmetrical. I find mixing sizes and textures gives your tree a more natural, organic feel. Place larger baubles deeper within the branches to add dimension, and place smaller, eye-catching ornaments towards the tips.
Lastly, don’t forget to have fun. Decorating the tree with my family is a favourite tradition. If you’re unsure, take a step back to check your spacing and adjust – sometimes, less is more. Just call me Martha Stewart!
