This coastal garden features a raised vegetable patch with impressive style

This 1200-square-metre garden is close to the beach so it has been planted with vegetation that likes coastal conditions. A big vege garden was started in orchard fruit bins painted in the same colour as the house and topped with mesh covers made from pine and wire to keep out any pesky critters.

Hardy varieties of plants that are well suited to this site’s conditions make the garden relatively low-maintenance and highly productive due to a compost heap, which keeps the soil full of nutrients. A sunny deck was sanded back but left unstained for the weathered look.

Top tips

  • In coastal locations grow hardy species of fruit and vegetables in boxes or protected areas.
  • Mesh covers will keep chickens and other animals out.
  • Most chemical weedkillers aren’t ideal for dogs and chickens so consider hand-weeding your lawn.
  • Don’t be limited by what you can buy in the shops. In this garden, the innersprings of an old single mattress support a passionfruit vine (above) and a children’s playhouse was converted into a chicken coop (opposite).
