Take a look back at some of our favourite kitchen renovations for some reno-inspo.
1. 1920s bungalow kitchen
When renovating their kitchen, the owners of this bungalow wanted it to be in keeping with the heritage style of the rest of their home. So they had the cupboard doors and drawers made to match the original tongue and groove walls. They also wanted to improve the use of their limited kitchen space. The results are a modest update which includes drawers, dishwasher and build-in over with hobs. They wanted to achieve a practical short-term solution within the confines of the existing footprint – but something that was still functional for modern family living. They have achieved exactly that, and what they have is a great little space with great functionality.
2. A small apartment kitchen is redesigned with architectural precision
Owners Jeremy Hanson and Cameron Law previously lived in a small inner city apartment before buying here. Therefore, they knew when they began this project what would work for them in a kitchen with space constraints – their wish list included a balance between minimalism and the display of lovely objects. Where there is a place for everything, but only a little of everything.
3. This Auckland villa’s kitchen blends modern style with a heritage feel
Thanks to extensive planning and considered material choices, this Auckland villa welcomes a new kitchen addition in a seamless merger. This kitchen is located in the main thoroughfare linking the pool, garden and adjacent double-height living areas. The kitchen is very visible and therefore needed to be an enduring style using high-quality, functional materials. The design focuses on clean lines, reading as a piece of furniture that would keep the space as open as possible and not interrupt sight lines through the house into the garden. We chose materials to complement both the traditional features of the original villa and modern lines of the new addition.
4. This small Lower Hutt kitchen gets a fresh makeover
Thanks to a crisp, clean reno, this 1920s brick bungalow in Lower Hutt is now equipped for entertaining. When the owners bought the home in 2008, the kitchen was tiny with hardly any bench space. The layout was confusing too – with the oven in a corner by itself, and a huge concrete walk-in pantry. It was a dark room that they didn’t enjoy being in – so they decided to renovate. They went with a white-out colour scheme, with simple, clean lines. There is also the addition of timber elements and pops of colour and texture through accessories to add a bit of personality. The end result is a light, bright functional space with storage and bench space.
5. Kitchen gets a Scandinavian inspired update
An unfunctional u-shaped kitchen gets a streamlined new layout with Scandinavian style. The kitchen has been entirely transformed and almost unrecognisable from its former self, the result is simple, clean lines with contrasts of white and wood. The owners wanted to change the small space from a u-shape to a galley kitchen so everything had to fit that format. They are thrilled with the results and find everything is now much easier to reach as well as being better for entertaining.
6. A matte black kitchen makes a bold statement in this Auckland villa
After completing a glossy white kitchen in their previous home, this Auckland family decided to go bold and created a seamless black kitchen for $40,000. As part of this families villa renovation, they wanted a kitchen that was matte black with no visible handles and seamless lines. The original kitchen was a third of the size of what it is now and was tucked away in a corner of the house. Having just moved from a freshly renovated townhouse where the kitchen was white gloss, they wanted to go the opposite way. They wanted something different, so opted for matte black with oak-colour timber – “we’d done the white kitchen already.”
