Discover how easy it is to transform the humble pallet into something handy and stylish with these three easy ideas for your home or garden
3 pallet furniture ideas you can easily make at home
If you’re eager to have a go at a DIY furniture project but you’re lacking in carpentry skills, an easy place to start is to adapt or repurpose existing pieces. Here are some ideas that use pallets as a starting point to create customised furniture – from a coffee table and bedbase to a pot planter.
DIY coffee table
Making your own pallet coffee table can be as simple as sanding it down to remove splinters, screwing in some castors and finishing off with a piece of custom-cut tempered glass. You could also seal or paint it or top it with a piece of raw or painted plywood instead – or try a distressed paint look!
Industrial-style bed
You can create a simple bed base by using single or stacked pallets. Depending on the size of your bed, you may have to use a saw to cut down some of your pallets to size. Just make sure the cut ends are facing inwards when you assemble the base.
Finish off with a matching timber bedhead – you could also try painting or staining the pallet base and bedhead to match.
Vertical pot planter
Perfect for kitchen herbs or to add a bit of colour or greenery to your patio, balcony or deck. You can use small potted plants or alternatively, make a sack for each shelf out of weed matting, fill with soil and cut holes to pop your plants into.
How to make the perfect pallet
You will need:
Pallet; hammer or crow bar; two lengths of timber the same depth as your pallet, cut to the width of your pallet; scrap timber; chalkboard paint; paintbrush and chalk; potted herbs or flowers.
Step 1: Lay pallet down and remove two or more slats to create two gaps to fit plants into at the centre and base of the pallet – where the cross pieces are.
Step 2: Lean pallet against the wall and slide each length of timber plywood onto the cross pieces to create two shelves for the pots to sit on.
Step 3: Once built, mount it to a concrete or brick wall using Dynabolts or using pieces of scrap timber to make French cleats.
Step 4: Place potted plants into each shelf and make labels for each using the pieces of scrap timber painted with chalkboard paint.
TIP: If the back of your pallet is missing slats, remove them and screw on a cut-to-fit piece of corrugated iron.
