Give Christmas classics a fresh twist with these easy updates

Up date
Create an event-filled Christmas calendar using mini envelopes and wooden pegs, and get creative with stickers and card. Write a fun little Christmas note for each day.

Circle of life
Pull out the old family albums and display your vintage photos and memorabilia. Create a layered wreath shape and secure with washi tape and Blu Tack.

Let it snow
Washi tape is a cheap and mess-free way to spruce up your walls for Christmas. Create easy geometric snowflake patterns that will peel off in the New Year!

Wood for the trees
Cut triangles of differing heights out of balsa wood with a craft knife and intersect two pieces to create simple and sweet 3D Christmas trees. Paint different sections with your favourite colours.

Bauble basics
Makeover some old or cheaply-bought baubles with cans of model paint in matching hues for a grown-up tree. Try threading small wooden beads onto twine and fashioning them into star shapes, or filling clear plastic baubles with delicate feathers for a natural appeal.

Twinkle twinkle
Tiny glimmering LEDs are the new fairy lights, and are pretty all year round. Display them in glass vessels in your entrance way for an enchanting welcome.

Throw some light
Easy and effective, tall candles placed inside a ceramic or concrete pot make a moody centrepiece. Prop the candles up using stones. Make festive lanterns using vintage jars, berries and fauna, with a tealight floating inside.
