Fun, functional and flexible family home

Shadecloth completely encloses the central courtyard, making it an enjoyable place to be all day. “We had many discussions about the shadecloth,” says architect James Russell. “Screen doors tend to keep you trapped inside, but this way, the family can leave all their doors open at night.” Homeowner Louise concurs. “We weren’t sure how it would look, but we’re delighted with the result. It protects us from insects, possums, birds, UV rays, even hail.”

Owners Louise and Matt were already fans of the work of local architect James Russell, so when they bought this block of land in Brisbane’s inner east, there was no question who they would turn to to design the home to go on it.

One of James’ most ingenious ideas was to wrap the courtyards – in effect, the whole house – in shadecloth. By doing so, the outdoor areas are shaded from the sun as well as protected from the pesky insects that are part and parcel of living in a subtropical environment.
