How to organise your linen cupboard to maximise space

Follow these easy organisation tips and shopping picks to keep your linen cupboard neat and tidy

Do you dread opening the door of your linen cupboard out of fear you may become buried under an avalanche of fitted sheets, towels and extra duvets you keep “just in case”?

At one point or another everyone goes through the stress of a dreadful linen closet. You cannot find a towel or a sheet to save your life and your partner’s car parts have managed to find their way into a section of it.

If your linen cupboard is in desperate need of some TLC, here are some top organisation tips that will have you on your way to #linencupboardgoals.

How to organise your linen cupboard:

1. The clear-out

First things first, you need to empty this cupboard that looks more like a disaster zone. Start in a small section, whether it be top to bottom and work your way down. Place all your items in an area where you can go through everything clearly – a spare bedroom or lounge room area is best for this. Once your cupboard is clear, dust and wipe down the shelves to ensure your linen is placed back into a fresh and clean storage space.

2. Declutter and cull

Once your cupboard is completely free the fun begins! It’s time to start sorting. Start by making different piles of things, such as towels, blankets, sheets, etc. This is the time to start clearing/throwing items away that don’t need to be there. For example, start throwing away any old towels with stains and blankets with holes (that you can’t recycle or sell). This also includes items you don’t use. If you haven’t used it in the last 6-12 months, then you can probably live without it.

3. Organise linen into groups

The key to a neat and practical linen cupboard is all about coordination. I like to organise my linen cupboard by placing items I use more frequently, such as towels and sheets, in the middle so they’re easily accessible and storing things I don’t use as often, such as winter blankets, up the top. Make sure you fold towels and linen neatly before storing them. Messy, thrown-in linen will likely tumble down on you when you open the door.

4. Label sections

Once you’ve grouped the queen bed linen in a pile, single linen in another pile etc., be sure that everyone knows this by labelling. It really helps, even me, to adhere to placing things back in the correct spot. It’s great for kids, too.

5. Keep it neat

Baskets are a stylish storage solution and help keep everything neat and tidy. Hand towels and flannels can be contained in a small basket so they don’t get mixed up with the bath mats. Once you have finalised the placement of your linen, it’s up to you to keep your space clean. An easy way to achieve this is by not overfilling it with 20 more towels and sheets. Keep the space practical by having enough of what you need. Also, keep in mind this space should be designated for your linen only, not your partner’s car parts.
