Bathrooms can be one of the most expensive rooms in your home to renovate, but creating a space that feels stylish and functional doesn’t have to blow the budget. The key is knowing where to spend, where to save and planning ahead before you start. If you love a particular design, go for it but adjust it to suit your budget.
Like any good renovation project, begin with a wishlist, a moodboard and a few non-negotiables. Spend time scrolling online, saving inspiration and working out the colours and finishes you naturally gravitate towards. Trends come and go quickly, so don’t go too crazy – remember you may want to sell it at some stage further down the track.
1. Showers
Tiled showers look amazing, but many people don’t realise they require waterproof membranes underneath, specialist grout and certified installation — all of which adds to the cost. If you’re renovating on a tight budget, some great-looking, all-in-one shower units are now available. These units simplify the process and don’t require extensive paperwork, such as the waterproofing warranties that councils require for Code Compliance Certificate (CCC) sign-off.
2. Tiles
Tiles are one of the easiest ways to create impact. Larger tiles can actually save money because they require less labour to install and you don’t need to tile every wall. Choosing one feature wall can create just as much drama without the hefty price tag.
3. Flooring
Flooring has also come a long way. Vinyl flooring now comes in fantastic designs that mimic stone or tile, making it a practical and stylish option for first-home buyers or apartment living. If you love polished timber floors in older homes, just make sure they’re properly sealed to cope with moisture; the only drawback is that you can’t have underfloor heating.
4. Vanity/Mirrors
When it comes to personality, your vanity and mirror are where you can have some fun. Curved mirrors, textured cabinetry and interesting tapware can instantly elevate the space. If storage is limited, mirrored cabinets are a game-changer — especially in smaller bathrooms.
5. Reeded glass
The new trend in bathrooms is reeded glass, a classy alternative to shower glass. It has vertical lines embedded in the glass, but the inside panel against the water is flat for easy cleaning. It makes a lovely feature in the bathroom because it is textured and you can’t see through it, which is nice and private, especially for couples sharing one bathroom. Sometimes it is good to have a little mystery.
6. Styling
Finally, don’t underestimate styling. Great towels, soft lighting, bath mats and greenery can make even the simplest bathroom feel luxurious.
A beautiful bathroom isn’t about spending the most money — it’s about making smart choices that suit your lifestyle and the ideas in your head. Bring those ideas to life in the smallest room in the house (though the loo is technically smaller, but that’s another story).
