A little colour goes a long way, as this family found when renovating their 1960s Hawke’s Bay home. Find out how you could be our fourth finalist and be in to win $5000
Alison and Andrew Palairet have put a clever, colourful spin on a mid-century home in Hawke’s Bay. The couple and their two sons, Jack and Angus, “escaped” to the regions from Auckland three years ago and found that this 1965 home on three acres “ticked the boxes”.
Alison and Andrew went to work on the mostly original house, bringing the layout “into the 21st century”, adding an extension and giving the home a modern makeover with mid-century touches. “We’ve redecorated throughout; gone are the green walls, mismatched carpet and pink marble fireplace,” says Alison. “In its place is modern decor with a nod to the home’s ’60s roots.”
Resene ‘White Pointer’ has been used through the interior. “We love its warmth and the hint of grey and taupe is so versatile and complementary, not to mention a great background for art.” This was paired with Resene ‘Alabaster’ on the interior trims and doors.
Splashes of colour give the home its fun factor – there’s the brilliant yellow front door in Resene ‘Supernova’ and a blue feature wall in Resene ‘San Juan’ in the main bedroom. The bathrooms are painted in Resene ‘Half Foggy Grey’ with unique colour-blocked feature walls behind each vanity – Resene ‘Clementine Orange’ in the powder room, Resene ‘Supernova’ in the family bathroom and turquoise Resene ‘Keppel’ in the ensuite.
“I’m really happy with the colour choices and the personality they afford the house,” says Alison.
