According to homeowner Siobhan McKenna-Murphy, her local Resene ColorShop had never sold her colour of choice as an exterior before. “They were pretty amused, but loved the outcome.” The colour in question? Resene Lumbersider Low Sheen Waterborne Exterior in Resene Bright Spark, described as a hot sizzle of yellow. For the trim, they went with Resene Lustacryl Waterborne Enamel Exterior paint in Resene Black White. Their Central Plateau home, which is located in Waimarino, now looks like the sunniest house on the street.

Siobhan and her husband Dave Murphy took inspiration from their travels when deciding what colour to use. “We were inspired by bold and beautiful places, such as Cork, Ireland, Lisbon, Portugal, Venice and Italy,” says Siobhan.

“It can be quite dull in our alpine village when there are grey skies and dark buildings surrounding you. Coming into our driveway now on a grey day really lifts our spirits.”
The love of colour has continued into the Waimarino home, too. The home was originally a bach and had strictly white walls. So far, they’ve used Resene Forest Green in the living room, Resene Peace in Siobhan’s home office and Resene Awash in the bathroom. Their son Daithi Og Murphy is just as keen on bringing colour into his room.

“Our eight-year-old Lego fan is currently planning a primary colour on each of his bedroom walls,” says Siobhan. “The house is a work in progress, but we expect lots more colour in the coming months.”
Siobhan reckons that the family has spent more time outside since the exterior was completed. “We love being outside, enjoying a barbecue or soaking in the spa, taking in the mountain views.”

The house is a beacon of sunshine and a bringer of joy all year round. It’s hard to imagine not smiling when driving past.
“It feels like the sun is shining on us even on a dark winter afternoon. It’s such a pleasant colour. Too much for some, but perfect for us.”
