Texture is an important element of interior design that is often forgotten. YH&G teamed up with two homeowners to show how you can create a chic, cosy interior using layers of lovely texture
Simon and Jude Woodward have spent the past two years respectfully renovating a rundown 1885 worker’s cottage in Hobsonville. The now-gorgeous home features beautiful textures which add warmth to the space, along with plenty of unadorned timber.
When Simon and Jude ripped up the carpet they discovered beautiful original kauri floors in the front half of the house. After spending a week trying out multiple stains, they couldn’t get the look they wanted, so eventually Simon sanded everything back. They then oiled the floors to achieve a more natural look, using Osmo oil from Natural Oils. The bathroom features textures to tie in with the floors, including a freestanding wooden rack draped with beautiful towels and blankets, and a cane laundry hamper lined with calico.
Towels & blankets
- Mix and match towelling for a designer vibe. Choose types and colours that complement each other: for example, simple pale-toned bath towels teamed with a patterned hand towel. It’s also less of an investment just updating a hand towel!
- Introduce darker, moodier hues to the bathroom in winter. Play with texture and try combining different fabrics.
- Layering or stacking blankets adds a ‘hotel’ feel at home. Use flat, light, hand-loomed Turkish-style blankets in bathrooms, and chunkier blankets for bedrooms and living spaces.
