To guide your Black Friday purchases, don’t forget to consider upcoming interior trends as we move into 2026. Maximalists will be pleased to know we’re moving away from muted tones and minimalist interiors, although it’s still possible to achieve a balance between a space filled with personality and a clean aesthetic.

Bec Burnard, Head of Design at Sheridan, explains this shift away from beige interiors that have dominated the past years.

“Homes are becoming warmer, more expressive and more personal. There’s a renewed appreciation for character and storytelling with spaces that feel lived-in, layered and reflective of the individual”, she says.

Nicole Skinner, Furniture Buyer at Mocka, predicts that 2026 interiors will be all about “casual comfort” and “blending styles” for a personalised feel, incorporating colours inspired by nature and darker, rich wood tones. “Furniture shapes continue to be curved to create softness and an organic feeling in your home”, she adds.

Libby McCurley, Interior Design Manager at Australian furniture and textiles brand MCM House, says, “We’re embracing rich textures, decorative detailing and materials that invite touch and add depth. Timber tones are also moving into warmer mid shades, which complement this more emotive approach to design.”

The most underrated furniture & decor items to buy in the Black Friday 2025 sales, according to the experts

McCurley says that one underrated home item customers should prioritise during sale season is lighting. “Lighting can set the tone of your space, occasional lighting and pendants add subtle layering and dimension.”

Lucy Sutherland, Director of Insights & Trends at Temple & Webster, highlights the coffee table as another overlooked item. “It’s one of those pieces that quietly transforms a room, anchoring the space, adding warmth and texture, and instantly making a living area feel more considered.”

She adds, “It’s an easy win if you want to give your living room a reset without changing all your furniture…a beautiful coffee table can completely change the mood of your home without being a big investment.”

Burnard suggests decorative cushions and throws as another underrated option.

“They’re perfect for refreshing a room with minimal effort. A designer’s go to for instant transformation, layering and adding your personality to a space.”

Lastly, Skinner says, “Make-up tables make a great gift and are good for the party season.”

Expert tips for buying furniture and homewares online this Black Friday

When buying larger or statement furniture pieces, it all comes down to planning and considering proportions.

McCurley emphasises the importance of planning. “Plan your space with all of its components, don’t just measure for the pieces you’re buying. That way you are considering the balance within the space along with ensuring it will fit in its desired location! Don’t forget about access into your home – mismeasurements of lifts, stairs and tight turns can make for a disappointment delivery!”

Skinner advises, “Make sure the proportion of your furniture is proportioned to the size of the room. Undersized rugs and artwork can also make your room feel discounted.”

How New Zealand shoppers can secure the best Black Friday deals

Sophie Lew, Senior Product Marketing Manager at Ecosa, emphasises the importance of preparation:”Be prepared! The best way to score real value (and not miss out) is to build a wishlist early — it helps you stay focused on what you actually want, and move fast when the deals drop”, she says.

Skinner echoes this approach, advising: “Plan your wish list well in advance and shop online first because many deals launch prior to Black Friday. Set a budget and stay calm and strategic, don’t get swayed by impulse buys.”

Ben Lovitt, VP of marketing at ANZ SharkNinja, adds another tip, advising shoppers not to “overlook bundle deals or gift-with-purchase promotions – they often deliver the best value”.

Another key takeaway is to focus on features rather than just discounts. Patrick Wang, ANZ Category Manager at Dreame, advises, “My top insider tip is to prioritise features over instant discounts.”

When it comes to robot vacuums, Wang explains, “While it’s tempting to focus on the biggest price drops, the highest value comes from models that offer advanced capabilities like strong mopping and AI obstacle avoidance.”

He adds, “Investing slightly more on Black Friday for a robot vacuum that is truly autonomous will give you a better return on investment in the long run than buying a basic model that still requires manual work.”
