How a busy family kitchen was transformed into a modern, practical space

Article by Homes to Love

From old and tired to bold and contemporary. Here’s how a kitchen that was on its last legs got a new lease on life

There were a lot of things wrong with this kitchen in its original state. The wall colour was “unappealing”, the fridge too small and the space was inefficient for a busy family who loved to entertain.

When the time came for a well-needed upgrade, the clients approached designer Sean Monk from Kitchens by Design to help them create “something bold, but warm.”

A neutral and crisp white paint was chosen for the walls to work with the prime textured timber melamine used for the wall cabinets and island front. This pairing provided the “warm” element, whilst the dark powder coated mesh rangehood and the dark finish Legrabox drawers in Terra black matt by Blum served up the “bold” part of the brief.

Stainless steel was a feature the clients liked in their old kitchen and wanted to integrate into the new design. Kitchens by Design decided a stainless steel benchtop would pair beautifully with the dark cabinets, helping to contribute to the “bold” vision. The slate plane that lies on the kitchen island dedicates that space to sitting and eating, but also helps to contribute to the soft industrial feel.

Nothing in this kitchen was done on a whim. The suspended bookshelf, for example, is a practical and stylish piece of storage in the new kitchen, but it was also designed in the same shape as the range hood in order to add cohesion to the space. The tapware is an aged iron-finish to help tie everything off.

Practical storage and ease-of-use are must-haves for a busy family. For this reason, the drawers are fitted with Ambia-line inner diving systems, which offer great scope for organising Legrabox drawers, and the cabinets have Aventos HK lift mechanisms. This mechanism is particularly helpful for busy cooks, as they allow the cabinet to be opened up and out of the user’s way.
