Interior designer Jackie Jones balances beautiful design with practical living. Here, she talks about her long term clients who wanted space to cook and entertain in their new St Heliers home

When interior designer Jackie Jones was tasked with creating a “forever home” in the Auckland suburb of St Heliers she relished the challenge – especially as the project is her second for the clients yet completely different from their previous house.

The three-bedroom, three-bathroom architecturally designed new build forms a U shape around a courtyard with the swimming pool to one side and a sunken seating area as the focal point.

The family loves to entertain and to cook so a “great kitchen” was a top priority, she says. “I like to give my clients the benefit of my eye for mixing materials and finishes, giving a unique look that suits their taste as well as their lifestyle. Interiors must be practical as well as beautiful,” Jones insists.

She chose Resene Half Sea Fog paint to provide a light and airy look and feel throughout, natural timbers to add warmth and interest along with soft greys, blacks and neutrals for texture and depth. She chose granite for the kitchen countertop and stools from Cult Design
to complement the family’s existing dining table.

Jones works closely with her suppliers and had pieces custom-made to ensure the home’s individuality. “The client and I worked together on all the finishes, from tiles, carpets, paints, exterior finishes, flooring, lighting and soft furnishings, right through to overseeing the curtain making and installation at the end of the build,” she says.

Jones, who started her business Jackie Jones Interior Design in 2000, specialising in residential spaces, says the project was a favourite, culminating in a team effort. Input from all channels – including the homeowners, architect and builder – contributed to its success. “My feeling is that everything works so well together in this home and I don’t think my clients would change anything.”
