Why it’s time to upgrade your bed for a better night’s rest

If your bedroom isn't set up for quality rest, you're missing a major piece of the wellbeing puzzle.

They say the kitchen is the heart of the home, but there is a strong case for it being the bedroom. We spend around a third of our lives in bed, after all, and the quality of that sleep has a profound impact on our health and wellbeing.

Why is sleep so important?

Quality sleep relies on progressing naturally through the body’s sleep cycles, including restorative REM sleep. During these restorative stages, the body undertakes many of its essential repair and recovery
processes. Discomfort from pressure points, aches and pains, or a partner’s movements can cause you to wake throughout the night, disrupting important sleep cycles.

“People are increasingly recognising the connection between quality sleep and how they perform during the day — whether that’s energy levels, productivity, physical recovery, mood or mental clarity,” says Agne Krisikaityte, Senior Product Manager of Bedding at Harvey Norman.

“Most notably, there is greater focus on the sleep experience itself. Customers are asking more questions around ergonomics, support and how different products contribute to overall sleep quality.”

Sleep routine

Our brains thrive on routine. Repeating the same wind-down ritual each night, whether that’s spritzing a pillow mist, lighting a candle or reading a chapter of a book, helps signal that it’s time for sleep.

Mattress selection

Agne says one of the biggest mistakes people make is choosing a mattress based on assumptions rather than individual sleep needs.

“There’s no universal ‘best mattress’,” she says. “What works exceptionally well for one person may not suit another. Sleep position, body type, comfort preferences, partner needs and even lifestyle factors all play a role. As a guide, mattresses should typicallybe changed every five to 10 years, depending on quality, wear and evolving needs. Life stages matter too. Changes in age, health, work patterns, or even sharing a bed can all influence what feels comfortable and supportive.”

“People often think about updating their sleep setup only when something feels wrong, but it’s worth reviewing it more proactively. Your bed should evolve with you because what delivered great sleep a decade ago may no longer be the best solution today.”

Cool and calm

Agne says awareness around temperature regulation is growing, with more customers recognising the impact bedroom temperature can have on sleep quality.

As a general guide, sleep experts recommend a bedroom temperature of around 18–20°C for optimal sleep. The Harvey Norman exclusive TEMPUR Pro Air range is designed to help support cooler, more comfortable rest for even the warmest sleepers.

It’s Tempur’s coolest, most breathable mattress. It allows 10 times more airflow so you feel two degrees cooler.

Rotating your mattress every three months helps promote even wear and maintain support. Use the change of seasons as a reminder to check its condition.

If you’ve long dismissed adjustable beds as something reserved for older generations or those with specific health needs, it may be time to think again.

Adjustable beds have evolved significantly and perceptions are changing quickly, says Agne. “Today, they’re increasingly being chosen as a lifestyle product. Modern adjustable bases offer personalised comfort and flexibility that appeal to a much broader audience.”

Harvey Norman’s product range features sleep-tracking technology and sensors that can detect snoring and gently raise the upper body to help minimise it. Designed with flexibility in mind, the range also includes zero clearance adjustable bases that can be placed directly into an existing bed frame – the perfect solution for upgrading your sleep without compromising on style.

“Whether it’s reading in bed, streaming your favourite show, occasionally working from home, reducing pressure points or creating a more personalised sleep experience, adjustability is becoming part of the broader wellness conversation,” says Agne.

Why we’re in our adjustable bed era

  • Makes reading, journalling and watching TV in bed far more comfortable.
  • Elevation can help reduce snoring, ease pressure points and support a more personalised sleeping position.
  • Split adjustable bases mean partners can tailor their side of the bed to suit their individual preferences.
  • It elevates those slow Sunday mornings: sitting upright with coffee, a good book, and nowhere else to be? Bliss.
