Tauranga artist Jasmine Kroeze’s Tales from the Table captures the moment where you’re just about to sit down for a long summer lunch with your favourite people.

Can you tell us about yourself and your art journey?

I’m Jaz – a mural artist and illustrator based in Tauranga. Before painting murals, I spent 14 years in fashion and textile design. That background never really left me. If you look at my work now, that influence shows up in how I layer and structure my work now. Colour usually leads everything for me. A palette will grab me before I even know what the piece is and the whole design builds out from there. It’s the part I get the most excited about, every single time.

You mostly do mural work – what inspired that?

My first big mural came from an artist call-out. I put my design forward not expecting much, and when they chose me as one of the artists, I was absolutely buzzing. That feeling never really left me. There’s nothing like seeing a design go from a small sketch to something huge on a wall people walk past every day. I love working at scale and now it’s evolved into the biggest part of my business, along with licensing my art to businesses to use on their products.

What’s the story behind Tales from the Table?

This one came straight out of my sketchbook. I was away on holiday, flicking through some old magazines and started patchworking little images together just for the fun of it. No client, no brief, then I sketched it out in ink and fell in love with it. It sat in my sketchbook for a good year before I realised what a great print it would make. Some of my favourite work happens exactly like that.

Where in the home would the print look best?

I’d love to see it worked into a gallery wall, sitting alongside other prints and photos with a bunch of personality. It would also do wonders on its own in a small space that needs some life – a hallway table, a bedside, a shelf. It’s such a great colour combo, so it’s perfect for a good dose of colour wherever it lands.
