Year of Art: In the studio with Jessica Higueras

We kick-start our Year of Art with a photograph of a Mediterranean summer
Photographic artist Jessica Higueras’ picture was taken while visiting Beach Club Arienzo on the Amalfi Coast. Globetrotting Jessica aims to capture the essence of a place so that viewers can imagine themselves experiencing the moment too.

We speak to artist Jessica Higueras, whose art piece Beach Club Arienzo featured in the January 2026 issue of Your Home and Garden as part of our Year of Art series. Her sunny photograph, shot on location in the coastal town of Arienzo (just east of Positano), takes us headfirst into the warm weather.

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and your art?

I’m a Peruvian-born photographer who has called New Zealand home for the past 25 years. I began my photography journey over two decades ago, telling stories through weddings and portraits, capturing the connection between couples and families.

Over time, my work naturally evolved into travel-inspired art prints, a space where I could combine my love of exploring with my fascination for light, colour and shapes and the feeling a place can evoke.

What draws you towards travel photography?

For me, it was a very natural transition. Last year, I spent two months travelling and used that time to reconnect with my photography. I loved wandering through new places, noticing the light, colour and shapes around me and capturing whatever caught my attention. Travel photography has become a lifestyle that feels authentic to who I am; it’s a way to explore the world while doing what I’m passionate about. I aim to capture the essence of a place so that when someone sees the print, they can imagine themselves standing right there, experiencing the moment for themselves.

What is the story behind Beach Club Arienzo?

Before leaving New Zealand, I booked Beach Club Arienzo, planning to visit the Amalfi Coast in the middle of summer. From the moment we were picked up from Positano by boat, the experience felt effortlessly magical. Arriving at the club, our umbrellas and loungers were ready, with prosecco in hand, music playing and lunch prepared to enjoy at our leisure. The sun, the incredible sea and the fun atmosphere made it a day to remember. It’s one of those places that makes you smile just by thinking of it. With this print, you can literally transport yourself back there every time you see it.

Where in the home would the print look best?

Beach Club Arienzo brings a colourful coastal vibrance to any interior. It pairs beautifully with neutral, natural textures and works especially well in living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms, hallways or anywhere in a beach house. Its warm tones and Mediterranean ambience instantly brighten a space, adding light and warmth, like a little slice of summer on your wall.
