The first 2023 Resene Colour Home Awards finalist created a striking porch

A Whangārei porch earns its stripes through a striking approach to pattern and colour

When Yvette Parker first purchased her home, she struggled to be inspired with the existing “beige on beige” colour scheme. The Whangārei local started out by painting the exterior in Resene Enamacryl in Resene Double Cod Grey, with a dash of Resene Enamacryl in Resene Concrete used on the window trims and balustrades for a fresh look. “The front door was upgraded with a couple of fresh coats of Resene Lumbersider in Resene Spotlight to make it pop, but the porch was still lacking something,” Yvette says. During lockdown, inspiration struck through the idea of a painted porch. After toying with the idea of a check pattern, Yvette settled on stripes as an easier alternative to add more colour.

To begin, Yvette painted the entire floor in Resene Enamacryl in Resene White, then marked out the width she wanted for her stripes before stencilling the lines in pencil and “making sure they were straight, which wasn’t as easy as I had thought.” She then painted the alternate stripes in Resene Lumbersider in All Black, creating a monochrome moment of epic proportions. “The effect was quite striking, and all our visitors have commented on it,” Yvette says.

The transformation from boring beige to bombshell is remarkable. “We have fun playing with furniture and decor to give the porch different looks for different seasons,” says Yvette.
