Summer brings many wonderful things: post-work swims, barefoot ice-cream runs and the ability to dry our washing outdoors again, just to name a few. But if there is one thing that many hot sleepers dread, it’s summer nights. Sandy and Danny may have sung about them romantically but for those of us in humid areas of the country, they bring sticky, sweaty nights of sleep.
A bedroom fan and cooling sheets can help. But to truly transform your summer snoozing, a cooling mattress might be the answer. Thankfully, bedding brand Ecosa has a potential solution – the CoolComfort Mattress – which promises unparalleled cooling power. But can a mattress really cool your sleep as efficiently as it claims? Being the very hot sleeper that I am, I put it to the test through New Zealand’s hottest summer months.
Shop the Ecosa CoolComfort mattress with 30% off for a limited time, priced from $1,330 for a double (usually $1,900), at ecosa.co.nz.
My Ecosa CoolComfort mattress verdict:
- My rating: 8/10
Pros
- Genuinely cool to the touch thanks to the high polymer cover
- Quickly draws away heat from the body using graphene and copper-infused foams
- Regulates temperature
- Four times the springs of a standard hybrid mattress for advanced support
- Eco-friendly construction: recycled zips, zero waste steel springs and ultrasonic quilting to minimise glue usage
Cons
- Firmness is listed as medium firm but we definitely found it on the firmer side
- Can’t use a mattress topper as it negates the cooling powers
- It’s very heavy, meaning it can be tricky to change the sheets (although is a good workout)
What’s so special about the Ecosa CoolComfort Mattress?
Cooling mattresses are not a new invention. Many on the market claim to be cooling thanks to breathable gel-infused foams and fillings, natural fabrics and designs that are structured in ways to maximise airflow.
But the Ecosa CoolComfort stands out thanks to its whopping seven layers, each one designed to cool the body in different ways. The layer of cooling graphene-infused foam graphene rapidly draws heat away from your body, and its neighbour, a layer of antimicrobial copper-infused air foam, helps to regulate temperature and keep germs at bay.
The cooling mattress is made from a flex matrix grid, with open structures to secure unparalleled airflow. All of that works in conjunction with a top cover made from a double-layered cooling fabric blend, which claims an instant cool feeling.
Delivery of the Ecosa CoolComfort Mattress
Before I get to the mattress review, I need to call out the wonderful service from the lovely Ecosa delivery driver who delivered the boxed mattress to my house. In a time where packages are often biffed over fences or ‘sorry we missed you’ cards left when you were actually home, the driver texted me to say he was on his way. He then checked if it was okay to leave the boxed mattress on my deck when some incoming clouds indicated rain was on its way. My assurances were not enough: he found a covered spot and let me know where he had left it. Delivery of the mattress was FREE and this was the care taken? Very impressive.
Okay, onto my review:
Upon unrolling the Ecosa CoolComfort, I actually said, out loud: “Oh my God that is so cold”. It was shockingly cool to the touch, thanks to the polymer topper. Points for that.
If you’re someone who loves to jump onto a new mattress and roll around, I’d exercise caution. The mattress is listed as ‘medium firm’, but I would say that like many boxed mattresses, it leans towards the firm side. This is thanks to the layers of memory foam and dense layers of pocket springs. I enjoy a firm mattress so this didn’t bother me, but someone who likes something squashier might find it a touch hard.

While with most mattresses this can be remedied with a mattress topper, it isn’t recommended with the CoolComfort. A barrier between the sleeper and high polymer coating cover inhibits airflow and cooling power. This means sheets lie directly across the mattress. I usually love a mattress topper to preserve the life of the mattress, so I was initially a bit hesitant about that.
Going without a mattress topper bothered me for the first night, but I haven’t thought of it since. The bounce-tech foam layer provides enough support that even a stomach sleeper like me feels supported all night long. I don’t wake up with cricks in my neck and hips like I did with our last mattress, as a bonus. In fact, I don’t know if it is the cooling power or the support, but I’ve been bouncing out of bed for my 6am Pilates classes.
Overall, is the Ecosa CoolComfort Mattress worth it?
It gets furiously hot upstairs in our townhouse in the summer months. Even in spring I usually wake up once or twice in the night and whinge/whisper to my boyfriend that “I’m too hot”. It takes throwing a leg out of the covers and pushing him to the far edge of the bed before I fall back asleep.
Well, I haven’t had to do that once since we switched to the Ecosa CoolComfort mattress, much to my (and his) relief. I can hand-on-heart say I’ve had some of the best nights of sleep of my life.
So yes, the Ecosa mattress is worth it, especially if you manage to snap up a discounted one in one of Ecosa’s many sales. Keep in mind that it is only November 2024 at the time of writing, so it hasn’t had to yet battle the full force of Auckland humidity. Check back with this review in February 2025 when I’ll provide an update.
My February 2025 update:
While January’s temperatures left us wondering where summer had gone, it arrived with an absolute hiss and roar in February. While this is fantastic for long lazy weekend poolside days, it is not great for sleep during the week.
Has the Ecosa CoolComfort mattress made a difference? Absolutely. Through my thin fitted sheet, I can feel the cooling mattress, even during some of the hottest nights of the year thus far. I am sweating less during the night, and the breathability of the mattress is noticeable.
I also want to give a shout out to any perimenopausal or menopausal readers, for whom overheating during sleep is a brutal, year-round issue. This mattress made a difference to nighttime sweat levels, and it is definitely worth giving it a go if you’re struggling. Ecosa offers a 100-night trial and if you’re not completely sold on it, the mattress goes to charity and you get a full refund. Win-win.
Where can I buy the Ecosa CoolComfort mattress in New Zealand?
The Ecosa CoolComfort Mattress comes in four sizes: Double, Queen, King and Super King. For a limited time, shop the Ecosa CoolComfort mattress for 30% off, with prices starting from $1,300 (usually $1,900), double size, to $1,680 (usually $2,400), super king size at ecosa.co.nz.
After an affordable alternative to the mattress? Ecosa also sells a cooling mattress overlay from $90 for a single to $120 for a double. It uses the same cool touch fabric to make your existing mattress about 2.5 degrees colder. And the cherry on top? The Ecosa cooling pillow for a sweat-free slumber. You’re welcome.
