You can’t miss the home at the end of a Long Bay close – it’s 652sqm. Newly finished for Djohan and Herlina Marzuki and Herlina’s 93-year-old mother, the exterior is mostly aluminium cladding, with some Alexandra stone used as a feature.
Once inside though, the house is broken into smaller, more manageable living spaces that flow seamlessly between spaces within the two wings, explains Landmark’s Jarrod Angove, who built the house for the couple. Although the main kitchen and casual dining space can easily fit a baby grand piano for Herlina to play when friends gather to sing and dance.

All together, there are six bedrooms, four kitchens, a separate temperature-controlled clothes drying room next to the laundry, three living areas, two separate garages and four-and-a-half bathrooms. There’s also an underground cellar, which started life as a cyclone bunker in response to the cyclones that swept through Auckland a few years ago.
The main kitchen and living space in the left wing opens out to sweeping views of Hauraki Gulf through floor-to-ceiling Vantage windows and sliding doors. To improve the insulation level of such large doors, the home is glazed with The AGP System. The clear Solux-e low-e coating on the glass reduces winter heat loss and blocks excessive heat to ensure it’s a comfortable space year-round for the multi-generational family.

“The large panels of glass really allow the magnificent view to be part of the home,” says Jarrod. It really does command attention, but turn your back on the view and in custom-built cabinets on either side of the fireplace is Djohan’s captivating pounamu collection, most of which are tiki.

Herlina is also a collector. She’s been buying salt and pepper shakers for 50 years. To accommodate her collection of 1000 sets, they built custom-sealed cabinets that run the length of the formal dining room between the kitchen. There’s a Christmas section (her favourite) and a Hollywood section with Elvis atop a pink Impala, as well as many, many other sets, including a spaceman on a buggy, Kermit and Miss Piggy, Aladdin and a camel.

Upstairs, there is plenty of room for their three grown-up sons and three grandchildren, while the right wing’s upstairs area is taken over with their self-contained apartment, which includes a spacious bedroom, Djohan’s office, Herlina’s sewing room, a living room, kitchenette, bathroom and walk-in wardrobe.
The couple truly got their heart’s desire with their new home.
