An original 1960s bathroom gets a black and white makeover

Black and white will never go out of style. Whether you have a lot to spend or just a little, bathrooms don’t have to be boring!

The project

The original 1960s bathroom was very old and dated. Our plan was to create a minimal, functional space with clean lines and contemporary fittings. No consents were required as we kept within the bathroom’s original footprint. From demolition to completion, the

DIY project took around four weeks. James is a builder so we saved a lot of cost on labour but our floor tiles cost a bomb – but were totally worth it; they’re amazing.

We designed the layout ourselves by drawing up a few different scenarios for the shower, vanity, toilet and bath, and then deciding what we thought would work, and look, best. We altered the old layout significantly so a big chunk of our bathroom budget was spent on plumbing. We wanted to make the room appear bigger as it isn’t a huge space, so we went with white floor-to-ceiling tiles on the walls, and black hex tiles on the floor. Black and white never go out of style, which was why we chose to stick to that colour scheme. Hopefully it will still look beautiful in years to come.

DIY downfall

Unfortunately, the matte black shower waste was put in the wrong place and not centred in the white tiled shower floor. Given the colour contrast, it would have looked very obvious if it wasn’t dead centre. To correct this, we had to make our shower larger, which took up more of the bathroom.
