Dried vegetables and cocktail garnishes await with this nifty food dehydrator from SunbeamThe Sunbeam food dehydrator takes 8-10 hours to dry orange slices, which have a myriad of uses.

Tell us, which kitchen appliance are you reviewing today?

I’ve tested out the Sunbeam Food Lab Electronic Dehydrator DT6000, $197, available from Marston Moor or Folders.

What does the food dehydrator do?

Boasting six trays, the Sunbeam dehydrator can dry everything from fruit to herbs and flowers to proving dough, making fruit rolls and even yoghurt.

What are the features of the Sunbeam food dehydrator?

Well, there’s not much more technical information you need to fire this food dehydrator up because it’s so easy to use. Put your fruit on one of the six drying racks, load them into the Sunbeam dehydrator, turn the power on, and select one of eight heat settings to match what you’re drying – the temperatures are all printed in large font on the front of the machine. That’s it. Ten or so hours later, once the machine has automatically switched itself off, harvest your bounty.

Dried fruit as Christmas decorations has become an ornamental favourite in recent years. Hang them on a tree, or along a line as a centrepiece.

Is owning a food dehydrator worth it?

That’s an emphatic yes. I’ve tried other dehydrators but nothing compares to this new Sunbeam food dehydator. Since we’ve had it in the office, we’ve had it going so much drying limes, lemons and grapefruit from the glut on people’s trees we’re thinking of doing a Your Home and Garden line of dried fruit. We’ve also dried oranges, apples, kiwifruit and pineapple and are very much looking forward to berry and stone fruit season. Next up are Rosemary and basil crackers.

What do I do with dehydrated or dried fruit?

Do you know those fancy packets of dried lemons for cocktails selling for around $10 for six slices? We can create 20 packs at a time with the Sunbeam dehydrator. All you need to do is add a dried slice of lime or orange to garnish your Aperol spritz cocktail. Friday drinks have never been so good. Also, we’ve been drying oranges for a hanging centrepiece over the Christmas table this year, as well as for garlands on the Christmas tree.
