To ensure your guests have a memorable visit at your place, focus on creating a space that is soothing, welcoming and not too over the top. A room with a soft colour palette, such as the white and blue we’ve used here, will inspire calm (think ocean and sky) and encourage your guests to feel relaxed and comfortable.

1. Bedding
Nothing says “just relax” like an inviting bed topped with soft linens and a pile of comfy cushions. To create a ‘luxe hotel’ feel, go for crisp white sheets in cotton or linen. Allow two pillows per person and mix it up with firm and soft options.

A linen duvet cover is a great guest-bedroom choice as its crinkly look means guests won’t need to spend time making up the perfect bed each day. Remember to add an extra blanket or throw at the end of the bed for cooler nights.

2. Bedside Table
A simple tray table like the one pictured is an easy and cost-effective bedside table for a guest room. It can also be folded up and put away when not needed. A carafe or small jug of water along with a tumbler is a nice touch, too. If you don’t have low-hanging pendant lights (as pictured), a table lamp is a must on each bedside table.

3. Beauty items
For extra brownie points, create a tray or basket of special toiletries for your guests. Fluffy white towels teamed with a fragrant soap or bodywash will make them feel super-special and an extra toothbrush won’t go amiss either. 4. Refreshment Station
Something your guests will appreciate but not expect is the inclusion of a refreshment station in the room. If you have the space on either a low dressing table or console table, an inexpensive electric jug with coffee cups, teaspoons and a nice box of teas will make your guests feel truly pampered.

5. Reading Nook
If you have space, an armchair in the guest room provides another spot to relax. Add a comfy cushion and a throw and remember to include a wide selection of books and magazines for your guests to read at their leisure.

6. Aroma
Sometimes it’s the little things that make a visitor feel at home. A small bunch of fresh flowers is a lovely addition to any bedroom as they add a soothing fragrance to the space. However, a scented candle or oil diffuser will do the same job. Keep it soft and subtle to avoid getting up your guests’ noses.

7. Closet space
A host should equip visitors with a space to store their clothes and belongings in. If the wardrobe in your guest bedroom is already in use, empty it out to allow your guests to store their bags and clothing items. If you don’t have an existing wardrobe, a hanging rail is an inexpensive and simple solution for your guests. The rail can be easily dismantled and put away under the bed when
it is not in use.

A console table or small set of drawers provides a great surface for folded clothes or personal items such as make-up, jewellery or a mobile phone – situate this area close to a power point if possible.
