How to create a stylish room for your tween that they will love

Add style and fun to your tween’s room that will last into the teen years

Dressing up is fun, no matter what age, so create a corner for your tween that will spark their imagination. As they grow, transition this dress-up idea from superhero costumes to helping them find their own style.

A great way to start is by adding a freestanding clothing rack personalised with an on-trend colour palette of Resene SpaceCote Flat in Resene Resolution Blue and Resene SpaceCote Flat in Resene Yogi, even if they have a large wardrobe. Add a mirror and a few wall hooks painted in Resene SpaceCote Flat in Resene Dawn Glow and you’ll have the beginnings of the perfect tween space. A storage box is the final addition for extra storage.

Walls painted in Resene SpaceCote Flat in Resene White Pointer, chequered floor painted in Resene Walk-on in Resene Dawn Glow and Resene Walk-on in Resene White Pointer, then finished with Resene Concrete Wax.

Checks on checks

If you are looking for a paint idea that is fun and will transition from tween to teen, you can’t go past a check pattern. On the floor, wall or lamp, this look won’t date. This is a great project that is simple enough for your tween to get involved with.

1. Start by painting the entire floor in Resene Walk-on in Resene White Pointer.
2. Create a 50cm x 50cm stencil in cardboard.
3. Draw the pattern on the floor using the stencil. Start at one wall and trace around the stencil with a pencil, making sure to keep the lines crisp and straight. Tape around every second square with painter’s tape.
4. Paint with a roller in Resene Walk-on in Resene Dawn Chorus. Allow to dry, then apply a second coat.
5. Remove tape when the paint is fully dry and repeat on the opposite squares.

Style that lasts

When investing in bedroom furniture, linen and accessories, go with great quality neutrals that can be ‘dressed up’ in different ways. Layering neutral bedding with patterned pillowcases that can be swapped out is an easy way to change the look without having to buy whole new sets. Then have some fun grouping art and collected things on the walls to bring out your tween’s personality.
