The right bathroom vanity can help you showcase your style and personality. Shelley Ferguson rounds up some of her favourite Mico Bathrooms designs to inspire your space
Which vanity are you? How to match your bathroom to your personality
Bathrooms have become one of the most exciting rooms in the home to design. Once all about function they’re now much more about emotion, featuring looks that can transport you to an exotic day spa or high-end hotel. The vanity is a key focal point and can set the style for the entire room, so here are my picks for different personalities.
1. Modern luxe
There’s a reason modern industrial bathroom styles are enduringly popular – the versatile palette works with a range of architecture and the materials are hardwearing (plus the nod to masculinity makes this a couple-friendly choice). Get a New York loft-inspired bathroom at home by mixing a range of raw materials including concrete, wood, glass and metallics. Square or rectangular vanities in grey, greige or woodgrain suit this aesthetic teamed with metallic faucet tapware in an aged patina such as brass.

2. Natural chic
Busy home? Crazy schedule? Kid clutter? Take your bathroom from chaos to oasis with a calm design inspired by nature. A stylish timber vanity with visible woodgrain (natural oak with chrome tapware is my pick) adds texture and warmth to white space, topped with a vessel basin reminiscent of a nature retreat. Streamlined shapes are key to this look so opt for simple wall-hung designs for a floating effect that saves space, and recessed handles or touch-close drawers for clean lines. Use baskets or bins inside cupboards and storage trays in drawers to store all items away. If you want to add more impact, touches of black add depth to this look.

3. Old world glamour
If you live in a period home or have a penchant for bygone days, channel old world interior style into your bathroom with a classic cabinet-style vanity. These charming, eclectic decorative pieces can be a focal point for the whole room, and while the solid shapes take up the most space there’s an abundance of storage behind the decorative doors plus a luxurious amount of sink space.

4. Bold drama
Are you drawn to dramatic interior styles? Then there’s no need to have a boring bathroom! Create contrast by mixing modern materials, textures and shapes. In order to create a cohesive rather than confusing clash, plan a colour palette that links materials together. For example, deciding on a black, white and gold palette could translate into black and white patterned tiles, a white freestanding bath, a white vanity with a black vessel basin on top and gold tapware throughout. Consider the era and interior style of your home before deciding on a graphic bathroom – strong contrast should be repeated elsewhere in the home for balance.

5. Pure & simple
While creative and confident interior styles abound in 2018, there are still legions of all-white interior lovers. If you’re one of them, the key is choosing the right textures and finishes to ensure your bathroom feels calm rather than clinical – that means less gloss and more matte finishes. While some white furniture pieces show every mark, white vanities are actually very practical, easy to clean and forgiving (especially if you use white toothpaste!). While white vanities are essentially a similar tint, look for different features to suit your interior style. Square or rectangular shapes with solid surfaces suit modern bathrooms while curved edges and sinks and panelled or grooved cabinets work well in classic homes.

Top tips for choosing your vanity
- Order your vanity early in the renovation process to ensure you meet the lead time to secure the design you want.
- The key function of a vanity is to wash and store, so consider the needs of your household in regard to these tasks when choosing a design.
- If you have a family opt for double sinks and multiple drawers for storage.
- If you’re dealing with a small space, consider a slim wall-hung vanity with a wall-mount tap so the sink can be set closer to the wall.
- When purchasing a vanity, make sure you measure closely to ensure scale and proportion is spot on within the room size.
- Bathrooms are high-use spaces, so invest in quality products that will last.
