Double, double toil and trouble

Amongst all the bubble-gum pink Barbiecore that’s been bucketing down on our feeds, a rival style has been brewing, bubbling slowly like a witch’s cauldron. Whimsigoth aesthetic is 90’s grunge meets Wicca spiritualism like something dug out of a high-school theatre costume cupboard. Think bell sleeves, maxi skirts, dripping candles and celestial jewellery. Sabrina the Teenage Witch or Stevie Nicks. If cottagecore is all about daytime domesticity, whimsigoth is what happens when the night owls come out to play.

Whimsigoth style pairs beautifully with dark, moody colours and rich textures, with velvet furnishings galore. The more strung-up stars and fairy lights, the better. Add lashings of floral wallpaper, a bedside table full of crystals and a dried wreath to complete the look.

You know you’re a whimsigoth if…

  • You think Stevie Nicks is the best part of Fleetwood Mac (and you’re not wrong, truly).
  • You’ve been known to whip out tarot cards at a party, to the groans and cheers of those around you. But let’s face it, you’re better at predicting the future after a glass or two of red wine.
  • A canopy bed is all you’ve ever longed for. It’s the perfect dramatic touch to pull around you when you’re suffering from a cold, à la Jane Austen.
  • Your home is full of dark, moody colours and rich textures, with velvet furnishings galore.
  • The more strung-up stars and fairy lights, the better. You’re a night owl so you need the perfect moody lighting for dreaming up love potions and curses for those who’ve wronged you.
  • You’ve been googling floral wallpaper obsessively for the past couple of months, trying to find the perfect roll. Forget a single powder room, you’re going to paper your entire house. It’ll be months before visitors spot even a glimpse of bare wall.
  • Move over Pams packet spices, your kitchen pantry is all about hanging bunches of dried herbs and strings of garlic bulbs.
  • Your favourite films are Practical Magic, The Addams Family and Hocus Pocus.
  • Some people have babies or “fur babies” – you have crystals.
