This laundry room brings stylish flair to a usually stale space

When we moved into the house five years ago we were not overly fond of the laundry/bathroom. It was cramped, the cabinets were swollen and warped from water damage, the tiling workmanship was poor, the hot-water cylinder took up a lot of space and the storage was open wire shelving. Also, with no underfloor insulation the floors were cold.

The brief

To brighten and warm up the space, increase storage, add a shower and bath, and have a bathroom basin and cabinet integrated into a single countertop which transitions through to the laundry.

How long did the project take?
About eight weeks as the tiling was quite extensive, we re-plumbed the whole house and moved everything around in the bathroom. We had three tilers in the end for all the projects – unfortunately, the tiles had to come off and be redone… twice!

How did you decide on your colour palette and materials?
The era of the house dictated our palette. We went for white subway tiles, oak cabinets, white engineered-stone countertops and porcelain sinks. We wanted to keep things timeless but added glass and black tapware for a modern twist.

Any tips?
Aim to fit in as much usable bench space as you can. It’s great for folding washing, dumping wet clothes and even keeping bottles of wine!

What flooring did you chose?
We did a renovation about four years earlier to open up the kitchen, dining, and lounge into one big, open-plan room. We chose Ales White Lappato 600x600mm floor tiles from the Tile Depot for that space and bought extra to use later in the laundry makeover.

Bench top?
Engineered stone because it offers a great finish, is easy to care for and was at the appropriate price point.
